Even if he somehow fell to us, and say our goal was similar to last year, I would want him to have a stretch in the G-leauge.

That's what worries me about Ace. One of the guys those that are always rated high, and then doesn't turn out well. Like a top-10 pick in disguise.

An accurate probability of finding superstardom at 9 should include 9 and all the subsequent picks. Just because teams haven't selected a star doesn't mean that stars aren't available.

Which is why I said its a flawed. Giannis was picked #15, Jokic in the second round, and Shai was the #11 pick. A star can be picked everywhere, but history shows your chances of acquiring a star after #5 is super slim.

BPM isn't the issue. It's your conclusion being based on a bad premise—that there are no stars available @ 9 based solely on evaluation of 9th picks. Stars have been picked after 9 in the past 10 drafts therefore it's natural to infer that stars are available at nine. Whether one is selected is a matter of good scouting, not probability.

That's what I literally said lol... are we arguing the same thing?

A star can be picked at #9, but chances are slim, there are tons of factors (draft strength, scouting, etc).

Wings with a 7'2 Wingspan Taken In The First Round Since 2016

The List: Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, PJ Washington, Rui Hachimura, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Williams, Tari Eason, Bilal Coulibaly, Jarace Walker

Wings that Meet the criteria this year: Cedric Coward. Rasheer Fleming

Thats actually crazy that its damn near a 100% hit rate on wings that can handle with that wingspan. Coward passes the eye test too

He has to have a promise. I think Brooklyn is the team that gets him since they have two several firsts (8, 19, 26 and 27). I'd be surprised if Jordi Fernandez passes on one of the most highly touted Spanish prospects four times in the first round.

Trade down with ATL…Coward (or Traore) @ 13, Yang @ 22 and that’s arguably as good or better than us having a 6-8 pick imo. I think both guys have the potential to be as good as players in that range with the right development.

I'm buying Masai preparing for a potential trade down. I think if the guy(s) (Maluach?) he values at 9 aren't there, he'll look to trade down to the next tier while picking up an asset.

Normally, I’d say if we traded down I’d be annoyed that we passed on Ace (if he drops). But honestly, I don’t think we’d take Ace even if he dropped to 9.

Ideally, the likelihood of getting a star/starter/sixth man in the draft this year should be historically measured against the players drafted in a similar range as opposed to those who are chosen exactly at the #9 draft slot.

If you look at players selected with +/-2 draft slots of the #9 pick, the number of players chosen between the 2000 and 2020 drafts who ended up being a solid starter or sixth man include:

#7 pick: Nene, Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, Eric Gordon, Steph Curry, Greg Monroe, Harrison Barnes, Julius Randle, Jamal Murray, Lauri Markkanen, Coby White

#8 pick: Jamal Crawford, TJ Ford, Channing Frye, Rudy Gay, Jordan Hill, Al-Farouq Aminu, Brandon Knight, Terrence Ross, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Collin Sexton, Obi Toppin

#9 pick: Amar'e Stoudemire, Andre Igoudala, Joakim Noah, DeMar DeRozan, Gordon Hayward, Kemba Walker, Andre Drummond, Jakob Poeltl, Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija

#10 pick: Joe Johnson, Caron Butler, Andrew Bynum, Brook Lopez, Brandon Jennings, Paul George, CJ McCullom, Mikal Bridges

#11 pick: Jared Jefferies, JJ Redick, Klay Thompson, Myles Turner, Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Cam Johnson, Devin Vassell

NOTE: Players with at least one All-Star appearance are listed in bold.

Of the 100 players selected in these drafts, 49% of them (49 players) became sixth man/starting lineup quality players.
Of the 100 players selected in these drafts, 17% of them (17 players) made at least one All-Star game appearance.
Of the 49 players who achieved sixth man/starting lineup status, 35% of them (17 players) made at least one All-Star game appearance.

TL;DR: When selecting in this range of the draft, you have almost a 1-in-2 chance of choosing a prospect who becomes a sixth man/starting quality player and should you do that, you have a little more than a 1-in-3 chance of choosing a prospect who makes at least one All-Star game appearance.

Given the Raptors draft history, I'd put our odds at choosing a sixth man/starting quality player on the right side of 50/50 and would say the same of the odds we choose a player who makes at least one All-Star game appearance.
Raptors record prediction: 45-37 (6th place in the East)

I'm usually pretty good at arm chair drafting and I personally have Coward as most likely BPA at #9. He looks and plays like a young Kawhi. Big hands, long arms, but with a 38" max vert compared to 32" for Kawhi. Can defend well and playmake a bit. Picture perfect form on his jumpshot too. I don't really care what the mocks say just take the guy with the most upside and least bust potential here.

If we were to trade the #9 pick to Atlanta in exchange for the #13 and #22 picks, I'd even be willing to add the #39 and would hope we'd be able to get two of the following with a preference for one being a forward and the other a big since they're our biggest areas of need heading into next season.

Guards: Nolan Traore (#22), Ben Saraf (#22)
Wings: Hugo Gonzalez (#22), Cedric Coward (#13), Drake Powell (#22)
Forwards: Noa Essengue (#13), Carter Bryant (#13), Adou Thiero (#22)
Bigs: Joan Beringer (#22), Thomas Sorber (#22), Asa Newell (#13), Hansen Yang (#22)

Ideally, I'd prefer one of Essengue, Bryant or Coward at #13 and one of Beringer, Sorber, Traore, or Yang at #22 (in that order).

#9 pick starts at 6.33 mil
#13 is 5.16
#22 is 3.37

so that trade would eat up an additional 2.1 mil of cap
so i think we would move the 2nd rounder purely because of cap implications.

Wow... the Suns and Kings really blew that draft...

#4 - Dragan Bender (drafted by Phoenix)
#8 - Marquese Chriss (drafted by Sacramento and traded to Phoenix)
#13 - Georgios Pagagiannis (drafted by Phoenix and traded to Sacramento)
#22 - Malachi Richardson (drafted by Charlotte and traded to Sacramento)
#28 - Skal Labissiere (drafted by Phoenix and traded to Sacramento)
#34 - Tyler Ullis (drafted by Phoenix)
#59 - Isaiah Cousins (drafted by Sacramento)

Not a single rotation caliber player among them...

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6414203/2025/06/10/nba-draft-guide-2025-top-100-prospects-cooper-flagg/

Going through that list, there are quite a few longbois in this draft with wingspans at least 6" longer than their height:

1st Round:

Dylan Harper (G) - 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan (+6")
Collin Murray-Boyles (F) - 6'7" with a 7'1" wingspan (+6")
Cedric Coward (W) - 6'5" with a 7'2" wingspan (+9")
Khaman Maluach (C) - 7'1" with a 7'7" wingspan (+6")
Joan Beringer (C) - 6'11" with a 7'5" wingspan (+6")
Thomas Sorber (C) - 6'9" with a 7'6" wingspan (+9")
Adou Thiero (W) - 6'6" with a 7'0" wingspan (+6")
Rasheer Fleming (F) - 6'8" with a 7'5" wingspan (+8")

2nd Round:

Drake Powell (W) - 6'5" with a 7'0" wingspan (+7")
Alijah Martin (G) - 6'2" with a 6'8" wingspan (+6")
Brice Williams (W) - 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan (+6")
Brooks Barnhizer (W) - 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan (+6")
Hunter Sallis (G)- 6'4" with a 6'10" wingspan (+6")
Jamir Watkins (W) - 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan (+6")

UDFA:

Caleb Love (G) - 6'2" with a 6'9" wingspan (+7")
Chase Hunter (G) - 6'2" with a 6'9" wingspan (+7")
Tamar Bates (W) - 6'4" with a 6'10" wingspan (+6")
Jaxson Robinson (W) - 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan (+6")
Amari Williams (C) - 6'11" with a 7'6" wingspan (+7")
Will Richard (W) - 6'3" with a 6'10" wingspan (+7")
Mohamed Diawara (W) - 6'8" with a 7'4" wingspan (+8")
Kadary Richmond (G) - 6'4" with a 6'10" wingspan (+6")
Norchad Omier (F) - 6'6" with a 7'0" wingspan (+6")
Jahmyl Telfort (W) - 6'5" with a 7'1" wingspan (+8")
Caleb Grill (G) - 6'2" with a 6'8" wingspan (+6")
Arthur Kaluma (W) - 6'6" with a 7'1" wingspan (+7")
Matthew Cleveland (W) - 6'4" with a 7'0" wingspan (+8")

That's 27 of the 100 prospects on that list, plus another 17 prospects have at least a 5" differential between their height and wingspan:

Tre Johnson (G)
Ace Bailey (W)
Carter Bryant (W)
Jase Richardson (G)
Noah Penda (F)
Nolan Traore (G)
Hugo Gonzalez (W)
Ryan Kalkbrenner (C)
Chaz Lanier (G)
Vladislav Goldin (C)
RJ Luis (W)
Eli John Ndiaye (F)
Lamont Butler (G)
Cameron Matthews (W)
Curtis Jones (G)
Isaac Nogues (W)
RJ Davis (G)

In total, that's 44% of the draft eligible players with at least a 5" differential between their height and wingspan.

Whether in the first or second round, or even as a UFDA, the Raptors are more likely than not going to come out this draft with at least one, if not two more longbois to add to the roster.
Raptors record prediction: 45-37 (6th place in the East)

Wings with a 7'2 Wingspan Taken In The First Round Since 2016

The List: Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, PJ Washington, Rui Hachimura, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Williams, Tari Eason, Bilal Coulibaly, Jarace Walker

Wings that Meet the criteria this year: Cedric Coward. Rasheer Fleming

Thats actually crazy that its damn near a 100% hit rate on wings that can handle with that wingspan. Coward passes the eye test too

Give me Coward let’s gooo

Trade down with ATL…Coward (or Traore) @ 13, Yang @ 22 and that’s arguably as good or better than us having a 6-8 pick imo. I think both guys have the potential to be as good as players in that range with the right development.

I think CMB/Demin with 13 is better for the upside.

Nets are a major threat to take Hansen given they have 4 draft picks and I think Joe Tsai alluded to taking a Chinese player if the opportunity was there. I would think their strategy is to go for high upside earlier on rather than high floor players. They may go for him at #19.

If we really like Yang, we should take him with #13...at 22 there will still be a few oft-mentioned names available...Beringer/Asa/Rasheer/Gonzalez/Markovic/Jase/Maxime/Traore
