2025 Offseason Trade and Free Agency Thread (Wow this is fun!)

I mean, the Thunder were the 1 seed in the west last season with chet and Jdub as their 2nd and 3rd best players (it was their 2nd NBA season, technically it was only Chet's rookie year since he sat out his whole first season w/ injury) and this year they're about to win the NBA title in Chet/J-dub's 3rd season (technically just Chet's 2nd season)..

And they have a top 5 player in the league as their best player (SGA)..we have a top 5 player in the league as our best player (Tatum).

It's not that farfetched.

This article says Tatum will miss most of, if not all of next season..it says we are focused on trimming payroll this offseason..The article also says we're looking to trade up in the draft, with JB, white, KP and Jrue as possible trade chips to move up.

Putting 2 and 2 together, we pretty much are punting next season.

He might. Shai's still averaging 32.4 ppg in this Finals and averaged 31.4 in the WCF. He's a tier above JT..

True C’s fans are tired of blowing the finals to GSW, 0-3 to MIA, 0-2 to KYK. These windows are so short. It’s time for big changes. All three of those series last games were blowouts.

If you do that Brown/SAS/NOP deal and previously discussed Jrue/KP/Hauser ones you can end up under the lux tax with

Pritchard, White, Trey Murphy III, WCJ, Kornet
Gabe Vincent, Scheierman, Naji Marshall, KO, Queta
7, 14, Walsh, Tillman
* Tatum

7 & 14 probably gets you two of Maluach, Tre Johnson, Asa Newell, Fleming, KJ, Carter Bryant. Or if they all go, at least a Nique, Clayton Jr, Penda type at 14. Hopefully they push someone from line 2 above to the bench.

32 try to 2-way if we can, or use it in KP/Jrue trades, send X in other trades, let Walsh go, etc. Good problems.

Let that group cook for a year, the adjust as needed in summer 2026, then add Tatum back. Vincent and KO are expiring.

* Caveat is I probably don't trade Brown still, lol. But, I like figuring out the moves anyway.

Ship off Hauser with the #7 to move up, or just stay and draft a PF to fill in for Tatum for the year.

This feels reasonable on all sides. I could honestly ask for more to trade JB, but trying to keep it somewhat palatable on the other sides.

SAS gets JB, and their costs are over with now. Average to Meh to bad salary and their 2 super valuable picks. But, nothing future. And we even give #28 back so they at least have a pick this year to enable trading future picks if they do other deals pre-draft.

NOP gets to upgrade from #7 to #2 for Trey, taking on some playable wings salary, and a future pick. I chose 2029 since we don't have one. If I ask for more from anyone, it's NOP adding another pick.

BOS gets a really good, young, JB replacement, two lotto picks in a good draft, and a future pick.

BOS doesn't actually save much money. You still do Jrue, KP and possibly Hauser deals to duck the tax. Without those 3, you have $30M below the tax for money you get back for them and Kornet. But only 2 roster spots left (since you added 4 players here). So, more work to do but plenty of maneuverability to do it.

I like it a bunch.

Will definitely be fun to see. One thing I don't love about our offense is how little we let PGs run things. If we can let both PP and White run things more and actually create shots for JB next season, and Tatum when he's back, that would help a lot. Why not get them easy buckets instead of having to create everything - esp when you have these shorter dudes who have been doing that their entire lives.

I agree with you. Having the ballhandler create an advantage and then dish for JT/JB to finish is something we need more of, especially JT. If I remember Tatum was a bottom 3 star in scoring assisted buckets last year. Marcus and Rob used to feed Tatum quite a lot and that element has been missing.

In PP's case, Payton played 27 minutes per game in the playoffs and averaged 1.5 assists per game ... 1.5 assists per game for PP is pretty lousy for him and just for a point guard generally. Thats an area that needs improvement imo and probably will improve with Payton in a bigger role next yr

Stephon Castle shot 28.5% from 3 last season. I know thats rookie shooting numbers and guys can get better. But Castle shot 27% in college. Nothing in the Celtics playbook with the Mazzulla Ball system is about trading backwards in shooting %.
In the worst draft since 2013 Steph Castle won rookie of the year. In 2013 Michael Carter Williams won ROY. Who cares
If there is a JB to Spurs trade, I'd be shocked if Steph Castle is coming back as the main piece. I mean, assuming Joe is still gonna be the coach. It's just not a fit

You bring up a good point about Castle's shooting, but I really like his game and I don't compare him to Michael Carter Williams. I think Castle has a high ceiling. Castle, Barnes and #2 for Brown would be intriguing to me. This would pretty much take care of the 2nd apron issue without even worrying about KP and Jrue (maybe Hauser is gone.)
I trust Brad with the talent evaluation part with both the #2 and Castle. I don't think they'll trade Brown, but I think there might be solid possibilities out there.

I don't think the Spurs do this at all. But after that Bane trade, who knows?

It's worth noting that Jaylen is ranked 30th in the league in terms of ranking players by their trade value, per Bill Simmons:

So we should be careful to not overrate JB in terms of his trade value. Some of ya'll are saying we shouldn't pick up the phone unless we're getting offered this, this and this, as if he's a top 15-20 trade asset - he's not..especially with that oversized contract.

Castle is ranked 40th. Both JB and Castle are in the 34-40 tier. Murphy is also in that tier - he's ranked 39th..
