From Jeanie's position I'd rather just be the cougar who to be at the forefront of the Lakers, but the 4 non Jeanie/Jim kids nobody really cares about, I can see how they'd be pushing them for years to get to be worth like 1.5-2 billion instead of 500 million or whatever the difference will be.
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change

Yea that funny me and my friend were talking how we are like France.

Its like the slow decline of first world countries around the world and I would say Canada is at the top. Our population is on the decline with out immigrants like every first world country in the world. Way to expensive for us to pump out kids let alone provide for yourself and more than 1 or 2 kids.

Whos gonna pay for all the old peoples pensions that are retiring now? So we import people from third world counties so we can stay afloat (Not talking **** that's how my parents came here). Which causes the people who have been living here to hate the new people coming in cause they are used to living a different way. Which also changes the culture of the country slowly over time. And Canadian culture isn't some ancient culture whos been around for thousands of year like other places around the world. Our country and culture is a baby compared worldwide. Canada is like 150 years old? While others have had the same cultures for over thousands of year. And emigrant families are down for the struggle just to have more kids compared to Canadians.

The new wave of immigrants are like slaves here to keep this country afloat. A slow decline of the country which probably cant be stopped. Similar to how the Romain empire fell. Keep the wealthy at the very top wealthy until they find a new place to go live.

Good video to watch:

First time in my life I want to move to States out of this unwinnable situation. Atleast for my kids...lol it's like leaving a war torn country. And yet this is Canada. It ain't getting any better it's only down from here. States is really only place left IMO with free speech and a chance

Yea man growing up here I thought I would never have to deal with problems like this and a possible world war that the USA/Canada is apart of.

..... i dont want to bring you bad news, but the USA is right now is on a downward spiral of epic proportions. You will be better off in Canada.

I honestly feel that as well. I think the world power is gonna shift to the west. All these colonial first world countries going to **** even the place where it started from (Britain). Our infrastructures are slowly becoming outdated and I don't think we got the money to redo it all or even the man power.

China and India can start building their infrastructure from scratch but with modern technology and set it up better for the future. Every empire falls and its not looking good for us man. I love Canada and its the only country I know but it **** sucks.

I think China or India is up next or some country that is not on anyone's radar. Maybe a country goes full AI and causes them to grow and advance at a crazy rate.

There's a reason USA will do anything to make sure the main currency used world wide is the US dollar. But with how they are printing money why would people or other countries put trust in that system. It's just never ending inflation and screws over the countries holding the US dollar.

Average seems to be about 100 years and we have just passed it.

Yep, US appears to be following the path of a declining superpower.

The one big thing Canada has going for it is latitude, if climate change is not halted or reversed.

Who do you think could be up next? or what region it would be?

I personally think global warming is a natural event that would happen with or with out us humans. I just feel we have been accelerating it. The good thing about Toronto we don't have to really worry about natural disasters like the rest of the world.

China does appear to be well positioned to be the next superpower, but if the global warming trend continues, I don’t see it being a long time for China at the top.

Whether natural or human driven, the trend towards warmer climates seems pretty clear, and has the potential to accelerate, which will have a much larger influence on the next great superpowers, or even just inhabited regions.

And yes, Toronto doesn’t really need to worry as much about natural disasters (although tornadoes could become more of a concern) and Toronto appears to be well positioned if climate change continues on its current path or even an accelerated path.

Makes you wonder if that is part of the reason the US is so interested in Canada, and why Russia invaded Ukraine.

I'm gonna be honest the global warming part of all this never crossed my mind. That is a good point going forward but I'm not sure if its effects will take place in the next one to two generation or in 10 but definably will play a huge role. A lot of ancient cites and civilizations were built on the cost and now have been lost to history due to rising sea levels that we will never know about. Places like New Orleans would be completely gone with global warming and rising sea levels.

With this in mind Toronto does seem like a nice spot for this reason. And who knows it very well could really be a reason for the US to take over Canada if those people in power could even think that far ahead.

But it really is nice to talk to someone about this stuff who uses critical thinking and not my god is better than yours or my culture is better than yours so that's why we are at the top. And someone who could see that empires fall and new ones rise all through out history. A lot people really think the major powers at the moment will never fall because they can't think for them self's and fall for propaganda.

Don't want to burst your bubble but China has its own issues. Facing population collapse, fragrant real estate market. Alot of their economy is running off the back of slave labour (Uyghur).

per windhorst

In late April, TWG Global announced a $15 billion capital raising effort and they wanted to create a fund that they would use to invest in sports. $10 billion of that money was invested by Mubadala Capital. Mubadala is Abu Dhabi. You guys have heard me talk about Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi’s deep interest in investing in the NBA and American sport. Mubadala Capital wouldn’t be able to directly buy the Lakers but certainly they couldninvest in something to buy the Lakers. TWG Global has a lot of investors. I’m not saying one piece of money goes to one investment… In their press release from two months ago, they said that they planneed to “build up sizable stakes in a range of sports assets in the years leading up to this investment.” So, they announced a $15 billion raise with $10 billion from Abu Dhabi to invest in sports assets. Two months later, they buy the Lakers for $10 billion. I’m just pointing that out.

I can see the Knicks going for this amount or close because they own MSG and that MSG real estate value is huge.

This whole discussion is very Toronto-centered. Lots of cities in Canada are still affordable for everyday middle class people, for example my wife and I have very ordinary jobs and bought a perfectly fine house for a bit over $200,000 four years ago without any family/generational transfer, and saved enough to buy another rental income property last fall, and both combined cost less than the average single family home in the GTA.

Anyway, this is all off-topic. The Lakers are clearly a unique case in the NBA as far as value goes, their market and brand value alone are in another league than most other franchises in North America.

Apparently the Tampa Bay Rays are about to sell for 1.7 billion. There is no more sticker shock for me with these valuations.

I listened to the Hoop Collective pod about this sale...and they made this seem like the biggest deal in NBA history not just because of the money but because of how transformative this could be for the franchise like what happened when the same ownership group bought the LA Dodgers and then invested in a top executive and spent on big name players.

Meanwhile I'm thinking...the Lakers are hardly a poverty franchise. It isn't like they couldn't afford the best facilities and personnel. And it isn't like they can just spend their way to bringing in all the best players because of the salary cap and the luxury tax aprons.

So is this really significant or is it business as usual?

However...I could see Masai being offered a huge deal to run the Lakers. That might be the only major effect of this new ownership group.

It should make a significant difference for the Lakers. They'll no longer be penny pinchers on items where they can spend significant amounts of money (management, player development, facilities, etc.). So all of the pieces outside of the players salaries just took a huge bump up, and that can be used to attract players to LA.

Wonder what this does for expansion franchise costs? How much will it cost new owners to buy into the league now?

But it really is nice to talk to someone about this stuff who uses critical thinking and not my god is better than yours or my culture is better than yours so that's why we are at the top. And someone who could see that empires fall and new ones rise all through out history. A lot people really think the major powers at the moment will never fall because they can't think for them self's and fall for propaganda.

The timelines on global warming are really unknown. As the natural systems in place that regulate temperatures around the world are destroyed (ice caps, rain forests, etc.), who knows how quickly warming could spike.

You mentioned New Orleans, but Florida I really see as the US state at greatest threat. It is sea level, and surrounded by ocean water. It is a state that could literally be under water in a few decades. And yet, people keep on moving to the state (for obviously warm climate and economic/tax reasons). I just don't know that I would want my family or property invested in Florida's long term future.

First time in my life I want to move to States out of this unwinnable situation. Atleast for my kids...lol it's like leaving a war torn country. And yet this is Canada. It ain't getting any better it's only down from here. States is really only place left IMO with free speech and a chance

That might be the only major effect of this new ownership group.

the lakers were the main source of revenue for the buss family, so they needed them to turn a profit

they have a barebone analytics team, and would pinch pennies. during lockout didnt way to pay the athletic trainer then the raptors hired him, during covid applied and received govt relief; other reports coming out about how they wouldnt approve assistant coach staying at same hotel as player during summer cause it was too expensive. didnt want to give lue $7 mil that he wanted only offered $6 mil etc etc.

they will operate more like the clippers, who have 3-4 names in the front office, deeper analytics scouting etc

but this is the nba with a cap, there is only so much advantage they can get from all that.
