Re: 2025 Draft prospects - thread 3
After the first time doing some Newell research, I would totally be okay with him at 12. Rangy, long, athletic. Covers a lot of space on defense. Lob threat. Nice looking shot. Great in transition. He's basically what you hope Beringer becomes in 4 years. I guess Beringer is bigger and longer, but Newell seems to have a much higher floor and similar ceiling.
He's probably on my short list along with Essengue and Demin for the 12 pick.

I'm happy with Wolf and Bryant
Wolf at #12? Yuck.. maybe as late first rounder or early 2nd rounder..
Yes I think he that good

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.
NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

He ran fast and jumped high.
Probably shot well also.

Pretty much makes me uninterested in players like:
Derik Queen
Sorber
Wolf
Broome
I can't do it. Vuc broke me.
Sorber doesn't really belong on that list. He's a legitimate defensive player with real physicality and instincts. And he is not Vuc as a lob threat. He's not a negative value athlete. He's just not a super leaper. He's a lob threat off the roll if he gets behind a defender. But he's not going to DeAndre Jordan it on you.

Sure hope AK don't **** the bed like Matas, right?

Why do guys act like Matas Buzelis is this highly productive rotation player. Matas is still a project. I like him as a person more than I like his game. It's very easy to root for Matas.

Is he not a highly productive rotation player? Has all my basketball knowledge failed me? No, it's the kids that are wrong.

His talent is really outstanding though. It’s an odd situation.

Sorber doesnt belong to that list, he can block and be lob threat. I would be fine with him as pick, maybe #12 is a bit high, but he has good IQ.
We have such limited tape on Sorber - it's possible he is the athlete many of you have commented saying he is, and that better guard play would help him in this area.
Great wingspan and standing reach.
When I watch scouting films or game highlights I just don't see a very bouncey athlete and I'm not sure his size makes up for a lack of bounce. He's not a DeAndre Jordan, Bam, Duran, etc. type of athlete.
He also probably doesn't belong on a list with those other three guys.

Yeah. I doubt whoever drafts him will let him play out of the post and face up like he did at South Carolina. When you aren't the featured player, complementary skills like shooting become more important. Centers are the exception.
If the shooting never develops, is he good enough at the other aspects of the game to positively impact the team? I'm not sure.
I don't know why you're arguing that a team would or should simply disregard the things CMB is good at to pigeon hole him into a role that is a fraction of his talent, skill and capability....just because?
Complimentary skills are not limited to shooting. He adds value with or without the basketball despite being a bad perimeter shooter.
1.13 PPP in Post-Ups
1.66 PPP on Cuts
1.28 PPP on possessions ending in his shot, pass or turnover
1.10 PPP in transition
1.17 PPP in isolation
0.92 PPP on 103 Drives
69.7% on rim attempts with more than 47 percent of those being self-created attempts
7.7 FTA Per 40 Minutes
+ 8.2 Adj. oRTG on/off (85th Percentile)
- 8.2 Adj. dRTG on/off (94th Percentile)
10.3 BPM as a freshman on a tournament team. The next closest player was at 6.9.
11.9 BPM the following season. The next closest player was at 4.1.
Yes, he's already good enough at other offensive aspects of the game to positively impact a team. He was one of the best two-way players in college basketball last season as a 19-year-old. He has one of the best all-around games in the draft. Point blank.
The sell of CMB is not drafting a one-dimensional defensive player and hoping he becomes competent on offense one day. The sell is drafting a really good two-way player and hoping he becomes a better shooter.

An Illini fan and watched a lot of Big10 basketball. While Kylan Boswell is a tough defender, he is 6'2 and totally dominated and stopped Wolf. Ive watched other teams take him out of games. The dude has a lot of skill, but disappears in many games. I think he can be successful if he can toughen up but unless we have multiple 1st round picks, I dont want to find out.

I dont want Ace even at 12. Dude is def a top 3 talent, but a headcase. He may figure it out, but I dint think it will be his 1st few years.

It could just be that he’s trusting people who are totally in over their heads. Don’t know about Ace as an individual, but his camp is sending up “distraction” red flags all over the place.
I would absolutely still take him at 12. As will someone else before then. The talent is too immense.

Re: 2025 Draft prospects - thread 3
What Ace is doing is very normalized now. Both Steph & Haliburton refused workouts, both guys slid way past where they could have been drafted (Steph should have gone #2), and both were worth the headache they caused in the draft.
I don't see Ace being on the level of either guy but you never know.

I would take the gamble at 12. That's a completely different game than trading up to get him while he's sliding.

Re: 2025 Draft prospects - thread 3
New Asa Newell interview. Newell was worked out by the Bulls and KC Johnson said the org was very impressed with him and especially his shooting. I think he's a realistic candidate for the Bulls pick vs some of these guys we haven't even worked out.
Asked what he'll bring to a team in the NBA:
"I just play with a lot of energy, when you have someone who plays with a lot of energy, motor, doesn't take any plays off, that is contagious. You see all the top teams doing, you see OKC doing that."
At least in mindset, he seems like a Noah type of guy who is going to focus on hustle more than anything else.
But worth mentioning he did shoot it really well in workouts unlike Noah and the 3P drills at the combine. His 37" vert was tops among big men I think. Vert by itself isn't worth much but when combined with a high motor player it's usually a good thing.
If you're looking for an immediate plug & play guy to help the Bulls next season with their needs vs a long bet for a future star, he's probably high on the list for AK.

So Ace is a head case now because he’s refusing workouts? Cmon now
He’s not the first
Unfortunately this won’t get him to slide to 12
