Philly/Utah

Post#1 » by louc1970 » Thu Jun 19, 2025 4:15 pm

Utah starts to actually rebuild through the draft.

Philadelphia sends George and #3
Utah sends Markkanen and #21

Philly gets a big who can score, play multiple roles.
Utah, for the cost of taking on George's contract, gets a chance at 2 top 5 players in this draft - Tre Johnson at 3, Ace Bailey at 5.

Lauri doesn't have this value at all. His stats don't translate to wins

A better trade would be PG/3/28 LAC 1st for Lauri/5/21. But it would be dependent on what players are available at 3 and at 5.

It seems like VJ is moving into his own tier behind Harper, but possibly into the same tier as Harper.

Yeah the gap between PG and Lauri is not close to pick 3.

And if it was, Philly still shouldn't pay it because without Embiid that's not a contending team and they can't count on having Embiid.

Zero desire for the Jazz to take on George's onerous contract unless there's heavy compensation. Others can have their own opinion on Markannen's value, but I'd much rather keep him than to do this. I have far more faith in Lauri bouncing back than I do in George.

This trade suggests the 6ers are way more desperate to trade George than the Jazz are to move up in the draft. I don't believe that's true.

Can't speak much to Utah, but I'm very sure the 6ers wouldn't trade completely out of the lottery to swap 1 injury prone fringe-all star for another who's on an even longer contract.

This has to be a joke right? Lauri Markkanen does not get the Jazz to move up 18 spots in the draft, even with PG contract taking into strong consideration.I'm not even convinced if Luari has any major positive value right now given that he had a down year while having a huge contract, and he alone sure isn't enough to move down from a top 3 pick to moving well outside of the lottery.

If 76rs believe Embiid willl be back they should do anything to help the team succeed while he is available. Keeping PG13 would kill all changes to compete with Embiid. So the reason to do this kind of trade is to try to maximize Embiid time. If they keep the 3:rd pick the person who they are going to pick most likely will never help the team with Embiid.

But Utah also really need to start their youth movement. So they really should trade anyone to get this early pick, even if it will cost them lot of salaries to dead weight. Who knows maybe PG13 will get some of his value back and Utah can trade him on his last year.

I do think switching PG13 and Lauri is not worth 18 spots in draft, so continuation:
To Utah: PG13, Oubre and 3:rd
To Philly: Markkanen, Sexton and 21:st.

Philly would get starting forward and 6:th man. And Utah would have 3:rd and 5:th pick which would really help restart their rebuild.

But IF Philly knows Embiid is never gonna play again, then they should keep 3:rd.

Let’s turn PG into longer/more money… said no one ever.
But it’s for that one guy, who put up numbers on that bad team, before struggling with injuries for the season.

So that is a bit of hyperbole… but if Philly thinks Embiid has gas to make one more go at it, IMO George is the better player/position to maximize that one go at it… and 3 would be more helpful off the bench than anyone drafted later (ideally).

As one of the few who thinks Embiid has one more run in him (if paced), i would run it back while collecting the best pick.
I could see LM/5 for PG/3 although again I don’t think it is some huge upgrade… just reshuffling chairs on a sinking/floating Embiid ship.

As a Jazz fan, this trade would bum me out. I want them to start competing, and no team with Paul George's contract on the books can really do that.

Lauri is arguably a negative asset. He can't return this much. Now if the #5 is involved it's a workable baseline to build a deal around.
