NOP - SAC

Post#1 » by bpcox05 » Thu Jun 19, 2025 4:56 pm

Splitting this out from the other thread to get more opinions….

-----------------------------

NOP Gets: Domantas Sabonis
NOP Gives: Trey Murphy, Kelly Olynyk, & #7
Why for NOP? The Pelicans bring in a legitimate all star/all nba talent to pair with Zion. Sabonis is an iron man and a great floor raiser. He can help keep NOP afloat if Zion misses time. Although, a frontcourt of Zion & Sabonis isn’t particularly good defensively, they still have an elite defender in Herb Jones at forward to help cover for them. As for the Zion/Sabonis pairing on the offensive side, Sabonis did shoot 42% from 3 last season (albeit on not the highest volume) and can help free up Zion with his elite screen setting ability and also find him on cuts with his passing.

PG - Alvarado / Payton / Murray (rehab)
SG - McCollum / Hawkins / Reeves
SF - Jones / Boston
PF - Zion / Matkovic
C - Sabonis / Missi

-----------------------------

SAC Gets: Trey Murphy, Kelly Olynyk, & #7
SAC Gives: Domantas Sabonis
Why for SAC? The Kings have a very ill fitting roster at the moment. They move off their star talent for a couple swings to find stars (Murphy growing into more than just a high end role player and hitting on #7). Murphy also helps fill a need as the Kings need another big wing/forward. The King still have Valanciunas at C as well to help backfill for the loss of Sabonis.

PG - Ellis / Monk
SG - LaVine / Carter / Davis
SF - Murray / DeRozan
PF - Murphy
C - Valanciunas / Olynyk / Jones

I don’t think the difference in value is 7 here. I think most team actually take Murphy over Sabonis. Just so much easier to fit his play style and contract on most teams and not create lineup issue that Sabonis produces.

Sabonis and Zion wreck teams nightly. Especially if they go with point Zion. There’s not a frontline anywhere looking forward to that game, trainers will be ordering extra ice.

I agree that more teams may be interested in Murphy because his game makes it easier to fit with more rosters, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s less impactful than Sabonis. Just comes down to the team.

Trey Murphy's are a lot easier to find than a Sabonis. I think the 7th pick makes it closer but I have sabonis as being more valuable than Desmond Bane and look what he was traded for. I have Trey Murphy as about the same as Desmond Bane as far as value goes.

Opposing offenses will wreck that team nightly. Every offensive player in the league looks forward to attacking the worst defensive frontline in basketball.

Not to mention Sabonis and Zion want to occupy similar spaces. What would happen is Sabo would get pulled out to operate out of the high post to accommodate for Zion losing some of the value of Sabonis.

Not a combo I'd overpay to put together like this.

It’s like people have never seen Sabonis play. The high post is where he operates, no change needed.

Put point Zion in a DHO with Sabonis, spread the floor with shooters…profit. Easy. 3&D guys and one more playmaker…that’s a recipe to winning (plus health).
