The loudest rumbles in NBA coaching circles this week are indeed New York Knicks-related.
After we reported Thursday that Mike Brown had indeed formally interviewed for New York's coaching vacancy, one source briefed on the process said Friday night that a hiring is not expected until after next week's draft, which will play out in two separated rounds Wednesday and Thursday for the second year in a row.
Both Brown and former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins are known to have interviewed this week and both are said to have levels of support within the organization as the Knicks chase their successor to Tom Thibodeau.
Brown, who was fired by Sacramento in December just months after the Kings gave him a contract extension, is said to have a strong relationship with Knicks executive William Wesley, who frequently interacted with Brown when World Wide Wes, as he is known, worked closely with a young LeBron James in the days James played for Brown in Cleveland in his first stint as a Cavalier. Yet we've also heard that Jenkins made a positive impression in his talks this week with Knicks brass.
The Knicks, of course, began their search after abruptly firing Thibodeau on June 3 … and then asked for permission a week or so later to speak to five coaches currently under contract: Houston's Ime Udoka, Minnesota's Chris Finch, Atlanta's Quin Snyder, Chicago's Billy Donovan and Dallas' Jason Kidd ... with Kidd frequently cited in coaching circles as New York's presumed top choice.
All five teams swiftly rejected those overtures

I can talk myself into Taylor Jenkins but Mike brown absolutely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WWWes didn't like Thibs and won that power struggle, Thibs gone...WWWes likes Brown so that means introducing your Knicks new head coach...
If you'd rather see your team fail so you can be right

This is the team that let Brunson walk and traded Doncic. They are apt to do anything. (stupid, that is)

a lot of coaches need a couple coaching stops before winning a championship. the good one's grow, adapt, which Mike Brown has shown he can do. Dude became a HC at 35 years old, coaching Lebron and some spare parts. he's 55, in the prime of his coaching career, he's had a lot of experience to learn along the way and his work w/ Sacramento was extremely encouraging

Yeah I honestly think that he is a good coach, who’s gotten better with age. The Laker stint really hurt his reputation, but he’s from the Pop, Carlisle, Kerr coaching tree.

He’s coached in a variety of situations before as well so this position shouldn’t be beyond his capacity to achieve.

Plus honestly for a team that wants to win a championship, Jenkins playoff record isn’t great. Brown’s isn’t either but it’s still better than Jenkins.

It’s sad that people are talking themselves into Mike **** Brown.

I was excited to fire Thibs because I thought we might actually hire a modern coach. Even possibly find our own diamond in the rough Coach from the assistant market.

Instead we’re looking to hire a guy who coached 4 teams in 11 years because he has a close relationship with an executive.

Do we ever make any moves strictly based on talent or fit or do we just acquire everyone based on relationships? This ‘relationships’ thing has become a detriment to the team. Hire and acquire people that can help you win a title, not because they’re your friend or family.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Well, if this happens, we got two options. The first option is hope for the best and that it works out. Think you know what the other option is, and don’t see the point of that.

It sounds like it’s bound to happen. He’s been close to Wes for over a decade. That’s like the same connection Thibs had with our front office

I think one thing has become clear ...Bryant is not in the running.

The other thing is it's seems like it's either Jenkins or Brown with an outside chance that stuff is happening behind the scenes with Kidd. If Kidd pries free , it is pretty obvious he is the top choice.

The thing with the team we have is they are a group of the utmost professionals. These aren't a bunch of prima donnas. They are self motivated.

You want a coach to EMPOWER them not stifle them. Brown might not be an amazing coach but he did do well with star players.

Jenkins with Brown as AHC would be an interesting combo. Because Brown probably doesn't get a HC job elsewhere.

How are you worried about the knicks coaching search when your "star" is driving over people and cant stay healthy for a full season.

There are no other HC jobs available currently. Allegedly there's gonna be more interviews but, I haven't heard a list of who yet. Jenkins doesn't sit right with me. Brown has more appeal.

I can't wait for this to be over. Gonna be a long week watching trades happen and the draft and we still don't have a HC. Which leads me to assume they aren't looking for any major trades. The 50th pick in the draft? We luck into Jokic 2.0?

Pretty doubtful they would make any big move without a coach on board. But hey, the Knicks may be getting a potential Mitch 2.0 from Nnaji. :D

What big move is there to make? Who are they sending out in a big trade? There really are none right now besides KD which makes no sense for us.

Fringe moves might be it this summer. Add depth to the core. The only starter I could see them trading is Josh.

i dont mind taylor jenkins. He isnt as experienced as Brown but he is young and he can grow with the roster and the organization
since bryant is not in the running, taylor is the next best thing in terms of youth and a bit of experience

but i think what is maybe more important, is the hire is allowed to bring his own coaching staff

Return to New York Knicks
