Kalkbrenner is a way better prospect than Garza. But I still think he's likely going to top out as a bit rotation player on a good team. I think he'll be able to function some in a drop scheme, but he has no chance at switching or defending off his man.

Its the Ringer, so YMMV, but I enjoyed this comment:

Before anyone points to Zach Edey as a success story for gigantic players who primarily play drop defense and have a heavy dependence on post play on offense, be aware that Kalkbrenner, while similarly skilled and balanced, moves at a more glacial pace than even Edey. Luke Kornet might be a better comp: less quick twitch, more quicksand twitch.

Kalkbrenner also plays a bit soft, not doing well playing against physical defense. Not sure how well that will bode for his future.

You could make the same soft arguments about Chet Holmgren.
The game is rather slanted against physical bully ball players today though.

kalkbrenner has rare traits you can't teach.
7'2 with a 9'4 reach and 7'6 wingspan.
And he plays that big. Just watch him eat up space in that highlight video.
If core strength is a problem, that is something that can be improved over time.

Rudy Gobert is slow as molasses too.
Luka Garza doesnt have the length to make up for his lack of footspeed.
Guys as big as Rudy and Ryan and Edey make up for their lack of footspeed with the ability to eat up lateral space quickly, and their ability to take away the offensive player's vertical space is the difference making aspect that makes them special and effective.

There isn't anything Rudy does defensively that Ryan can't right now.
Rudy can be a trainwreck at times defensively but thats because his indecisiveness gets him caught in between A LOT.
Plus Ryan can actually handle the ball in tight spaces and shoot from the outside.

I'm more excited about Kalkbrenner than I was about Edey and Kessler and I loved both of those guys as prospects.
Plus I think Kalkbrenner would be a Finch kind of big man that can shoot and facilitate a bit in this system.

Again, if the plan is he is the backup big man and if he develops into more great, I get it. Aside from age, I guess I would just ask why him over Kalkbrenner?

I worry that Kalkbrenner is so slow, he'll never be more than a spot minute back-up.

That's right. We have a Kalkbrenner in Luca Garza. I love Luca. I just wish Luka had more lateral quickness. But that could be said for many NBA players.

No, we don't. Garza is lucky to be 6'10, Kalkbrenner is a legit 7'1. They also play extremely differently. That said, imagine if Garza was 7'1, how much better is he rebounding and defensively

I’d take a flyer on Niederhauser if he is there at 31

I feel like passing might be the area where Thomas Sorber 7'6" wingspan can particularly effective. You can see some passes that he execute are possible because he can find an good angle thanks for his gigantic wingspan.

I love me some Sorber. Health questions aside, I think he is top 7 talent. I think best center in draft.

Clayton Jr for me in a landslide. Jase is slightly more athletic but not even close to the basketball player that WCJ is.

Other than being 22 as compared to 19, I can't understand why so many people appear to be disregarding Clayton Jr's polished overall game.

I honestly believe he ends up being a better NBA player than Dilly. OKC drafting him at 15 wouldn't surprise me at all. They identify talent as well as anyone.

I love WCJ. I'm not sure if Jase is more athletic tbh. I think Claytons floor is a very high level backup pg, but I can see him becoming a starter for sure. I am warming on Jase though with how good his shot is and how much he improved through this year, while being 19 yet. Hes small but has a good wingspan(better than WCJ), not a pure PG but next to Ant we need someone who can play off the ball more.

Prefer Clayton, but wouldn't be upset if we went Jase at all.

Curious if we make any deals to move back from 17 to snag more future picks as well.

I'm getting a vibe about Jase. Probably the best shooter in the draft and solid in all aspects of the game.

I believe that Ben Saraf might be the best PG of this draft in terms of deceleration, finding right angles and being deceptive in general. Reminds me TJ McConnell as pick-n roll manipulator.

Very fair take, sir...I think a high end backup PG with a decent chance to start at some point is a realistic assessment for Clayton Jr.

I will also add that Jase really struggles to get through screens and the college game hid his lack of size when it came to getting his shot off.

My gut tells me we end up taking Sorber or trading the pick.

He has a high floor but his size and age are going to push a bunch of higher upside players in front of him.
He's already better than Dillingham but thats more of an indictment of Dillingham than anything else.
Taking Dillingham at 8 was front office malpractice.

Based on the players and that could be in our range (both 17th and 31), who are the players we can’t pass?
