Thats what I always leaned to with Durant coming in, and considering the options available otherwise.. I'd rather see the team keep going on the younger path and strike again later in a year. Team is not in contend-now mode and isn't put together to do so; win-now mode? moreso yes.

With Durant, its a lightning in a bottle situation and a semi-short window where the first year, it may not click well enough but make a decent playoff run, and other spots on the team may not be "established" enough, or at all.

With Durant, inevitably have to reset and restore in 2-3 years.. rather than with someone else for double that at 4-6 years at least, much more on Wembanyama's timeline when he's an MVP candidate, making deeper playoff runs.

But the chance is worth taking if it happens and would be legitimately fun and progressive for the org.

Seriously, "waiting on a bigger name that fits our timeline?"
That really narrows it down to only a few players that have a bigger name than Durant that are 21-25 years old and looking to switch teams.

Maybe we know something about Luka not resigning in LA?(Wouldnt that be the icing on the cake for Dallas?)

Zion? (I wouldnt consider him better than Durant but his age fits our timeline)

I don't know that any name will be bigger than KD but plenty are younger and just on the cusp of bigger careers.

I was thinking Deni Avdija (and then heard that name on SM), maybe Murphy III, maybe Herb Jones (not a big enough 'name' though a terrific specialist in his own right), maybe Lauri?

Zion and his self-control issues can stay far far away. We're not doing reclamation projects anymore.

I think with the LAL majority stake sale, they need a name and brand like Luka to go forward with. Suspect he stays.

I loved Deni in that draft we selected Dev but Avdija went a couple of picks ahead. Would love it if we could pry him from Blazers. Murphy III may already be too costly. Jazz want the #2 pick and I suspect we could get Lauri and 5 (for the low cost of someone's first born because that's how Ainge rolls) but we've yet to budge on moving it. Good. If PATFO's so sure on Harper, have to trust it.

Have to say, my initial reaction is disappointment we didn't land KD, especially with the growing KD to Spurs rumours surging. This isn't some unbeatable package, and Suns didn't get a C like they reportedly wanted )maybe they pick one at 10. Dev and Barnes both have higher 3s % and though 10 is Suns' pick back to them and higher than 14, I think we could have beaten the picks package. Still, it takes two sides to get a deal done.

I see the above options for adding upgrades this upcoming season. I'm not thrilled with having to watch players out of position or riding pine who we selected in previous 1st rounds.

Branham can go wherever for whatever. Blake is good on D but can't shoot reliably. Sochan is on video for the requisite summer practice making 3s video uh oh. Has to prove it in games.

The video is from Vegas. And today he posted this an hour after the KD trade:

Trolltastic lol

Another year of Devin force proving he's the best second option the team isn't it.

Apparently season ticket holders were sent a letter about some BIG prospective deals/additions. Feels like we had the inside track with KD interest and whiffed. Hope I'm wrong and plan B is really plan A and kicks ass. Time to consolidate some assets for talent upgrades.

And then there's this:

Some long-time front benchers have been leaped by Sweeney which will make for an interesting dynamic but he's a quality acquisition for us.

It makes me wonder whether KD having reportedly only really Spurs as his top destination that it made us too sure on whatever package and not offering more? We know for sure KD would have extended with us so it would not have been a rental.

Can't help but feel let down as there were so many growing rumours of us being close to landing him. I wonder how Wemby feels not getting to play with his favourite player growing up. As a fan looking from the outside, feels like a swing and a miss and so I hope we have something else lined up to improve the team.

Basically went how expected with KD.. just didn't seem enough like the Spurs to get KD with both sides of the situation. No doubt he would of been a big boost to the team for a couple years though.

Houston always seemed like the best fit, and Suns probably were backed in.. with SA folding their arms (rightfully) and staying put.

And, I believe the patience the org. will have will prove to be most beneficial and for longer.

Still got Fox to integrate fully this season, and then Castle has to still develop into a adequate jumpshooter (Maybe this season).. he's got the rest down well enough.

Less pressure to win/contend, more time balance to get there more naturally. Shouldn't be trying to contend now; but try to win now. If things go well enough, Wemby/Fox/Castle (probably) at the helm.. give the team a good chance to go far in the playoffs. The others have to sacrifice and fill what the team needs.

Primary goal for me for the team next year: 2nd round advance, lose credibly, or of course.. win that : ) .

Consolation prize: 1st round credible loss in 6-7 games.

Getting a guy like Herb Jones or TM3 would be really progress to get there. Then it would just be seeing where things need to be with big forward (Sochan??).

Yeah fair point. I like the off-season rumour mill, a guilty pleasure, and now that I've mentally untangled from getting caught up in the KD whispers, the disappointment has waned and your solid ground points deserve more attention.

Good reminder that we had but five games with Wemby and Fox. Can't wait to see them grow their connection. And agree about more organic internal growth. To that, I have high hopes for Castle, am in the middle with Sochan - that shot looks hitch free yet still slow and deliberate, and am ready to move on from Branham and maybe Blake (though I'd keep the latter if I had to choose between them).

To your list of potential additions I add again Deni Avdija. Toolsy and Spursy. True SF at 6'9". Great feel. 24. I'd trade Dev for him but because of contract disparity either a 3rd team would have to get involved (Nets? Jazz?) or we'd have to take on extra players to match salaries. That's if Blazers would even entertain trading him.

It may seem I want to get rid of Dev but it's just more about asset consolidation for roster balance and reasonable upgrades you mentioned. We more or less have an idea of the player Dev is, and despite a disappointing season, we still know he's not the #2 option we thought he'd be. In fairness he was put at 1 and 2 and sometimes 3 in the past with playing alongside a carousel of back court team mates. Consistency and roles matter.

But with a high likelihood that we draft Harper, even with extending Fox, it looks like our back court of the future is Harper/Castle. Until then, we have a log jam back there and need a true starting SF who fits our timeline and of course a back up C. With Barnes still with us, he slots into PF this season but that's a long term need as well.

Lots of work to do.

So either we are increasing or decreasing interest in the Zinger, or we are looking at a big at 14 or are looking to trade up for one.
