I don't get this from the Pelicans standpoint.

The pick next year can't get much worse. Plus, you had leverage over the Pacers because if the Pacers wanted to make a separate move in the future regarding their other picks, they'd have to go through the Pelicans to get their pick back.

The likelihood is the Pacers are picking in the same range next year, but you never know. Hali and/or Siakam could get hurt and all of a sudden the pick is in the early teens. The pick was only protected from 1-4. You might as well roll the dice since the 23rd pick this year isn't that far off from being an early 2nd.

The Joe Dumars era is off to a roaring start.

If Hali misses next season this becomes a great decision by Indy

It so sad for Haliburton and the pacers but yeah. Could a great decision by the Pacers.

The value of the IND pick just went up significantly

The east is going to be wide open next year

I still think that Raptors making the playoffs is a long shot but it’s definitely possible .

The Heat not going after Durant could be a massive mistake by them !

Indy can legit do a stealth tank a year to set up a dynasty.

For the record, I said at the time that this was a horrible move by the Pels. You don’t just hand out the downside risk to a team for basically free.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Made no sense that they couldn’t get at least a 2nd. With that said, I suspect Pacers would have made moves to remain competitive next season if they didnt have their own pick. Plus it was top 4 protected.

You just never know with injuries or just an off year. They will probably be fine because they are a very good team but they could just get buried in injury. There should have been additional compensation to do this as you say.

Pelicans did this to include the 23rd overall in a 3 team trade between NO, Bucks and toronto.

Scotty to pelicans, zion to bucks, giannis to Toronto.

Interestingly Indy GM made the trade last Tuesday, the day after Game 5 that Hali got that calf injury. They knew they were going to stretch Hali to play Game 6, which he did but didn't get injured due to early blow-out. Then with Game 7, the injury was bound to happen. GM knew with history of calf injuries of what it could turn into, so the moment they had the opportunity to get their pick back they did it. The deal was probably on the table for a while and after Game 5 they did it before Pelicans figured it out.

Unreal of the Pacers to trade for their 1st Round pick back. They knew there was a chance Halliburton could get hurt now or in the offseason with the calf injury.

This describes the difference between the Pelicans vs the Pacers as an organization lol.

Could Indiana tank next season? Imagine them getting another lottery pick?

They have too much depth to tank. They'll still be a .500 level team or maybe even the same regular season wise but easy 1st round fodder

This has shades of the Durant injury in the 2019 playoffs. I would not be surprised in both cases, if the players had partial tears, and it was just a matter of time before a full tear.

I would imagine Pacers GM made that deal with the knowledge that Hali’s Achilles was going to go at some point.

If Haliburton's potential injury ends up in the worst case scenario with what's left of the finals, he could be out for a significant amount of next season. No reason to do it now

Not too late to fire Dumars. And just in time for me to get angry again with Masai having a pick for 8 minutes before deciding that's just too much draft capital for a rebuilding team to have.
