For Dallas, I'm not saying they should trade for Jrue, but all of the reports say Dallas is very interested. Maybe it's not true, but let's just assume it is. Dallas fans don't want to trade Gaffard, they'd rather send 3 players they don't want. Gafford is important for Dallas because AD and Lively have had injury issues, but let's be real. Dallas needs AD and Lively healthy to go far, and if they are, then Gafford barely sees the floor in the playoffs, especially when you factor in Flagg and PJ. Gafford and PJ both need new contracts after this coming season and they're both not getting paid by Dallas unless they trade someone else that their fans don't want gone. If Dallas trades for Jrue, Gafford is probably gone.
I think one of Gafford or Washington probably is gone, or at least should be used to get something else rather than letting both hit free agency in a year. One thing to keep in mind is Gafford can likely be extended off his current number, so Dallas might could lock him up now. Washington is very unlikely to extend off his current number because the market for his archetype is so much stronger than the one for Gafford's.
And yeah Lively/AD aren't dependable. Now ideally you trade Gafford and then backfill backup center at a cheaper salary point and Washington is okay knowing he's going to be a high minute bench guy and will re-sign understanding that. But I think that's pretty optimistic. He's not dumb. He sees Flagg and Lively as part of the future and AD the current and that the team will want that to be the frontcourt.
But that's all aside from what's fair value for Jrue. And the issues that arise with the fact Dallas has no neutral matching. The closest to that is probably Klay but on this board we mostly all see him as a negative, some a big one, other like me, think its overplayed for a guy who still provides a ton of spacing because of how team's defend him. Then Martin is probably a negative coming off last season and with the length of his deal. Hardy a natural matching addition for Dallas, but also negative because he 's not very good.
Now I think Jrue is negative value. Defensive guards just don't get paid like he is paid and I think we have real questions about what kind of offensive player he is going to be moving forward. Now he's a better player than what Dallas would be moving but he also is due more money and for longer. Seems like it offsets it enough that Gafford's value shouldn't go to a team other than Dallas.
But maybe the Jrue market is as strong as all the Boston-centric media is trying to paint. But I'm skeptical.
