Why would Beal waive NTC to go to Utah?
To get a buyout and choose where he wants to go
Not sure if he would take a buy or what that might look like.

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

I don't think Beal takes a buyout at all. He doesn't want to leave PHX and, while he can't stop PHX from waiving him, he doesn't have any reason to make it easier for them to do something he doesn't want.

Beal can stop this for sure. If that happens then next path for Suns to drop out of tax is to trade O'Neale and Allen in to capspace.
Keep Beal as 6th man.

They don't need to drop below tax, just 2nd Apron.

Financially the should reset their repeater, it's costing them like $100m a year.

If they stretch-waive Beal they cut about $30M off their payroll instantly, which gets them right to the tax line. That's the only reason to even consider doing it (because they'd have to eat $22M a year of dead cap for the next 5(!) years)
There's no apron-limited move that would justify eating that kind of dead money; if they do it, they're planning to get out of the tax.

Stretching Beal seems like one of the dumbest long term moves the Suns could make (which I guess is why it’s on the table).
Not only is PHX limited in their team building options due to owed draft picks but they’d be putting a $22m hole in their books for 5 years which would really hamper their ability to carve out any significant cap space. Stretching Beal would somehow make the Suns future outlook even worse than it already is.
If the Suns are desperate to get off Beal they need to buy him out and eat his dead salary the next 2 years (which is obviously terrible but less terrible than stretching him imo).

If they're not going to stretch him they might as well just keep him. No reason to waive him.

They cannot just stretch waive him as is, because they already stretch waived Little/Liddell. A team can have no more than 15% of the salary cap stretch waived, and Beal would have to take a decently substantial buyout to get below that.

Not to challenge your CBA knowledge Scoot, but I read the provision and it says future cap year...with the rising cap, I think they could get Beal and Little under the 15% mark starting in 26-27 (assuming they wait until the new year rolls over before they stretch him)

They could absolutely waive Beal, keep his full cap hit for 25/26, and then elect to stretch Beal in 26/27. That’s a new wrinkle in that a team can hold off on stretching and elect to stretch in a future year, for sure. And the cap would rise in 26/27 to enough that Beal/Little/Liddell would be under 15% of the cap. But they wouldn’t be able to stretch Beal starting this upcoming 25/26 season without a major buyout.

How much would Beal & Little stretch cap hit combine for? It seems less than 15% of the $154m salary cap for 25-26’.

15% of the cap is about $23.2m. Beal stretch waived would be $22.16m. Little and Liddell are already stretch waived on the books for $3.81m combined.

Also, where th CBA uses “then future salary remaining” with stretch waiver window closing by August 31 each year, the existing year wouid still count as “then remaining future salary” as the games played to earn said salary (even if on an alternate payment schedule) have yet to be played.
