Love me some Freddddddddddddddericooo. He's going to have a big year playing off the attention that Durant is going to insert into their starting unit.

Love this because it addresses something NBA teams have long done that I think is dumb... whenever a player is up for anew deal they compare it to his last salary. That's in the past. FVV had a team option that they declined. The relevant comparison is not to what that option was or the deal he signed in the last FA trip he had... the relevant comparison is what he would get in this FA market today. But teams usually base extensions off the last salary and give in to player pride. This is a fair contract for what FVV is today and what he could realistically think he'd find on the market, even though it is a huge pay cut from his last salary.

Good move. Fred was massively overpaid for his basketball ability, but a perfect fit for the culture change that Houston sought when they brought in Ime. (His pay was also cap filler, so they hit the minimum threshold).

Now that they are seen as possible contenders with KD on board, Fred is probably happy as hell that his undrafted self is still being paid handsomely to play the game he loves. And he'll still keep those youngsters working hard and not taking anything for granted.

What if it's not a steal but actually what he is worth? He obviously didn't think he could do significantly better.

25 is good, but it is only for one season since he got a player option. He averaged 14 ppg on under 40% shooting. He will most likely ball out this season and hit the free agency.

He got paid the same in one year than he will in both of his extension. Crazy.

It's a combination of both, especially with the lack of cap space this off season. Like you mentioned, a 25m annual salary is still a great contract. The biggest contributing factor for him to take this team friendly deal is that he is returning to a team that just finished 2nd in the Western Conference. A team that has already addressed their biggest weakness offensively by trading away an inefficient small SG for one of the best isolation scorers still at 37yo.

If you combine the two contracts together, it's 133.6m for 4 years for an AAV 33.4m. Still well above what many would have predicted he'd get after leaving us.

Hauser's shooting would add a lot of value.

Happy for VanVleet that he continues to be sworn by by his coaches. One of the great undrafted players we've ever had.

I think it is fair market value - he was grossly overpaid previously. But yeah, this CBA is going to force the smart teams to stop giving out massive contracts to non-stars / role players.

I think it's a bit below market value.

I'd have placed his market value around Derrick White (4-years, $118M), Jalen Suggs (5-years, $150M), Quickly (5-year, $160M). So, basically around $30M/season.

Given VanVleet's age, I'd have expected him to go for a 4-year deal. There must be a wink-wink agreement here.

Interesting that his contract now lines up with KD. Fred is the only real vet in the rotation besides Adams who also has a relationship with KD. I wouldn't be surprised if those two guys are the main reason KD wanted to go there outside of chance to win.

"Big" is probably overstating it some. But if he can rediscover hitting his 3 at a strong rate and how to draw fouls, that'd be nice. I imagine he'll be bombing passes to KD all day, though.

Assuming Amen improved enough to become a secondary ball handler (Andre Iguodala/Aaron Gordon level), Sengun making better decisions at half court and KD sharing some ball handling duties, FVV should have a more efficient season on both ends. He’s not dubbed Steady Freddy for no reason.

Great deal. This is right at Amen Thompson’s rookie extension.
