Cheap QB for this year at least. They probably believe the rest of the roster is ready to compete.

Re: Wilson gets another big bag
Russell Wilson ranked 27th (38.7) and 21st (50.7) in QBR in 2022 and 2023 respectively, if you think that's on the system or team around him, then you're delusional. The reality is that he declined rapidly because his style of play was never going to age well. He was never a true pocket passer and relied heavily on broken plays and scrambles out of the pocket. As he got older and slowed down and was forced to be a pocket passer, the warts started to show. The Seahawks knew this.
His tenure in Denver was legacy damaging. It ruined his aura and exposed him.
The Steelers had the 5th worst pass blocking offensive line last season. So, I'm skeptical that this move will be a success.

Someone said this morning though that Payton was not doing Wilson any favors in the play calling last season.

Russ wasn't a fit. Payton wants a guy who plays within structure. Can see & use the middle of the field. Russ does neither.

Jeudy route running was elite compared to Sutton, so when it comes to accurate on script passers, he is the most invaluable receiver on the Broncos roster by far. His issue was trying to stay healthy.Cactus Jack wrote:wco81 wrote:He threw a couple of 50-50 balls to Jeudy which didn’t come close to being caught.
As it turned out, better to work the ball down the field to tie the game.
Jeudy isn't a 50-50 guy. That would be Sutton. But he was out. Denver currently just doesn't have a ton of difference makers on that side of the ball. Javonte Williams doesn't seem to be the same player since the injury. He looks like he's moving in quicksand.

What the hell?
https://football.realgm.com/wiretap/50856/Report-Steelers-Russell-Wilson-Expect-Long-Term-Deal-After-Season
Why would the Steelers give him a long contract?
I thought the appeal of signing him was that he was cheap this year and probably next.
But beyond that, it would be dumb to pay him big money when he'll be 36 at the end of November and presumably a new deal would kick in when he's 37-38.
Is he going to lift the Steelers over the Ravens and Bengals? Or even the Browns, which are loaded other than QB?
Not to mention, even if Steelers somehow make the playoffs, come on Wilson isn't leading that team on a run, unless they have like a dominant defense and he only has to put up 15-20 points a game, which would have to ride a very strong running game.
So after this season or next, Steelers would have to pay either Wilson or Turner, if he's still on the team.
Or they'd have to try to move up and draft a franchise QB. If they don't do it this draft, who knows if the next couple of QB draft classes are going to be particularly strong.
I guess the Steelers have high expectations but unfortunately their division rivals are around the peak of their roster-building cycles.
They may be better off rebuilding, finding their next QB through high draft picks. But that fan base probably won't endure that since it's been awhile since they made the playoffs or did anything in the playoffs.

Re: Wilson gets another big bag
Well the first 3 games he's started for the Steelers he's doing well, 6 TDs, 1 int, increasing passing yard production.
Of course the rest of the season will play out and if the Steelers make some noise in the playoffs -- they should get in -- are they going to give him a multiyear extension? It's only costing them $1.2 million this year a bargain for the performance so far.
But he's turning 36 at the end of November. Steelers payroll seems pretty reasonable, though the big salaries are on defense and the OL.
So Wilson could yet get another bag!

Re: Wilson gets another big bag
Steelers may have to pay Russ after the season, since they want to be at least in the playoffs next season and Fields probably isn't good enough.
I didn't watch his games when he was leading the Steelers to wins, just saw highlights.
But was he doing more than throwing 50-50 balls that Pickens was pulling down?
Ravens pass defense isn't that strong but he may have given the game away with the two ints, one of them just reckless.
Lot of time left so he could redeem himself maybe.

Pete Carroll throws his hat into the ring for the Bears job.
Strongest division in the league this year and at his age, he’s going to rebuild a franchise, make sure the #1 pick, a “generational” prospect is coached up to his vast potential?

I don't think he'll be a serious candidate at his age. He still wants to coach. But team's also know that he's 73.

Re: Wilson gets another big bag
Steelers may be on the verge of losing 5 straight, one and done in the playoffs.
They haven't scored 20 points in those 4 straight losses and counting.
Basically Russ led this team to the treadmill, not good enough to do anything in the playoffs but not bad enough to draft a true franchise QB for the Steelers.
But they still give hi an extension in the offseason?

There is no one in the upcoming draft who is a franchise QB, no matter where they will end up being taken. I would sign whoever accepts a 20 mil per for 3 seasons between Fields or Wilson, competing for the starting job.wco81 wrote:Steelers may be on the verge of losing 5 straight, one and done in the playoffs.

I do agree with everything negative regarding the Steelers. But I do give them some grace. I mean, look who they actually lost to. Chiefs? Virtually nobody beat them this year. Eagles? Some folks have them in the Superbowl. Ravens? tough Rival game. Bengals? That's a playoff team that didn't make the playoffs. Not all losses are the same. They should probably shoot the schedule makers, but if the Steelers got thru all of that, I'm gonna give them some grace and a small chance this weekend. Even though all signs show them falling off a cliff this weekend. But as mentioned above, that gauntlet was brutal, and might possibly give them preparation for playoff football. We shall see.

And Russ played well in 3 of those last 4 loses. They were just better teams overall. Now that money should no longer be his primary goal to feed his family but to win another ship as a continuance to his legacy. A 20 mil per for 3 years would guarantee the starting job. Either that or chase the money elsewhere but I think he should stay cause of the fit. A Steelers vs Broncos playoff matchup would be sweet.LAKESHOW wrote:I do agree with everything negative regarding the Steelers. But I do give them some grace. I mean, look who they actually lost to. You need to beat some of those teams to advance in playoffs. We know they can beat Browns and New York teams.
He might win a game or two but it is apparent you are not going far with Wilson in today's NFL.

He will turn 34 at end of November so this deal could take him to age 38 or 39.
He has to be one of tHe highest in career earnings.
Will his game age well as Brady or Rodgers? He relies on mobility more than them. Rodgers doesn’t seem to rely as much on second reaction plays in his recent seasons and Brady was always about getting rid of the ball on time.
On paper it’s a great situation with the Broncos. Then you look at the rest of the division.
It turns out that Russ wanted a fully guaranteed contract & that's when negotiations with the Seahawks broke down. This stalemate went on for a year. That's why there we're trade rumors as early as the 2021 offseason.
Fwiw, his agent is primarily known as a Baseball guy. Russ is his only Football client. That's why he drew such a hardline in negotiations. He wanted Russ to set a precedent. But it never came to fruition.
Russ agreed to go to Denver only when they gave him a verbal agreement for a deal that was fully guaranteed (7 years & $350 million). But according to him, Denver backed out of the agreement after the trade was finalized & then tried to renegotiate with him.
So Basically, Denver pulled a fast one on him & his agent lol.
