Should Wemby look to bulk up?

Post#1 » by D.Brasco » Thu Jun 26, 2025 12:26 am

Based on Wembanyama's current physique do you think it would make sense for him to add any significant mass to his frame, or is his current build ideal for his more perimeter oriented playstyle? Someone like Giannis worked on putting a lot of muscle onto his frame from when he first came into the league, but KD was pretty content to stay quite slim throughout his career.

I think what makes him dangerous is his flexibility, bulking up might hurt his game imo.

While this is true, that lack of bulk can come back to haunt him.

If he ever wants to establish himself as a post presence or even to approximate the contact that Giannis takes when driving to the rim, he probably would need some extra muscle to brace impacts.

No. He needs to keep to a Durant physique.

Bulk up in the style of KG, not Giannis.

I hate the term, bulking up cause it comes with so many fears and misrepresentations. And really bullcrap. There's this crazy assumption that it makes you more likely to get hurt and less mobile. Football players arent less mobile. They're elite and while theres no need in basketball to have those proportions, especially at 6'6, there is still far more benefit for weight lifting than downside. You lift, you stretch and you shoot. Not to mention there are basketball specific muscles and excersizes one can focus on, instead of bodybuilding muscles.

Biggest advocate of playing in your correct weight class whatever that may be. Some guys which are few can hold a whole lot of weight or lose it.

Mass on big guys is a huge red flag and the biggest misconception under the sun. I'm not talking about a naturally heavier or smaller guy at the same height I'm talking about specifically the individual itself

Embiid, Giannis, Zingiz, AD, Cousins etc legit the list is endless.

Kareem and Duncan should be the blueprint. Funnily enough one swam alot and the other did a whole lot of yoga.... well Jokic said F it let's clock miles in theses tree trunks

Wemby already has injury concerns and that won't go away. Don't want to add fuel to the fire

Conditioning >>>>> Silly buff muscles especially for a fast and quick anaerobic sport.

To be honest I know sports in general don't share the same trees as proper athletic conditioning which is a worry in of itself. Yes it's a balancing act for what you do but the stuff is dumb and illogical yet the NBA community still advocates. Why? I legit have no clue.

Because PEDS has been prevalent for 60+ years that doesn't mean they should abuse it. And no don't keep the head in the sand mentality. You still need proper regiment.

Basketball players should train like boxers and swimmers not trying to be a strongman

I'm a bit concerned with bulking, apparently he's grown another 2 inches in height.

Durant actually bulked up more than it looks like. He came in to the league as a twig and actually he's listed as one of the heavier forwards now at 240

He naturally thickened out with aging. He didn't bulk up.

Natural gains from strength and conditioning of being an athlete happen.

Bulking up is a specific process to become much more muscular than you'd get from natural strength and conditioning by playing basketball.

Yes, he should attempt to, with an emphasis on strength as opposed to mass. He'll never be massive (muscular wise) with his frame.

Bulking up now would be a mistake. He needs to work on staying healthy, and then just on skill/approach on offense. He's not going to turn into a Giannis-type physique, that wouldn't really fit his body type.

Kd never had the muscle tone/definition of Wemby, neither did KG. He resembles Giannis more, he doesn't necessarily to be jacked like him but I can definitely see a transformation where we say 'wow he's gotten huge since his rookie season' in 4-5 years... ala Giannis.

Or even Tyson Chandler, compare how he looked his rookie season on the Bulls vs Knicks/Mavericks. I think Wemby can put on that amount of mass in the next 5-8 years. When he does you're probably looking at the modern day Wilt with 3pt range.

KD's current slim is a lot different from his past slim.

Wemby will slowly get bigger and stronger, but that doesn't mean he will be "big" at any point in his career, but he will likely have a better ability to hold his position and to move against resistance.

He already added significant muscle since before he was drafted. From what we saw around draft time, he has some good people around him that work with him on his body (if I remember correctly, the Spurs even hired one of his guys?).

I'd say he should keep doing what he has been doing so far. Slowly but surely building his body, while working on flexibility and mobility as well, not forcing any quick mass gains.
