I think Pritchard is 20 lbs heavier. I'm hoping Jase could be something like Garland or Sexton.

Or maybe Rob Dillingham?
Yes. Dillingham is actually a lot smaller than Jase.

Rob Dillingham
Barefoot Height: 6'1"
Standing Reach: 7'11''
Wingspan: 6'3''
Weight: 164.2 lbs

Jase Richardson
Barefoot Height: 6'0 1/2"
Standing Reach: 8'2 1/2''
Wingspan: 6'6"
Weight: 178.4 lbs

Jase has a much bigger wingspan and standing reach and is 14 lbs heavier. Half an inch shorter.

But both guys were very good at scoring the ball efficiently in college in spite of their size.

It goes without saying that Jase becomes infinitely more valuable if he's able to play on the ball full time as a point guard.

We'll see if the Magic give him the opportunity.

Can you do Sheppard and Cason as well? They were the smallish PG i was intrigued with last draft

I think Pritchard isn't a terrible comparison for the kind of player he can be. A little different though, I like Pritchard's handle and range more, but think Jase should be able to do a little more damage toward the basket and free throw line than Pritchard.

I'm surprised Dillingham is taller than Jase, he looks really small to me. He and Pritchard have really similar measurements, Jase actually has a few inches of wingspan and standing reach on both of them.

I just think he is going to be a player that can fit seamlessly next to star talent as long as he holds his own on defense. And there is also a chance he finds extra upside if his ball-handling gets slightly better.

Hopefully he gets a lot of chances to run point in summer league in a couple of weeks here.

I get the idea behind making the comparisons here.

The size isnt the issue overall when we are comparing him to every recently drafted player in the league.
The issue is moreso the fact that we are comparing him to point guards that are 100% point guards with point guard skillsets.

Is Jase a point guard with a point guard skillset? From most accounts I've heard he's basically a very undersized 2 guard connector right now that is a gifted shooter and finisher. These guys you are listing are non-versatile point guards.

Jase is like Jordan Crawford minus 3 inches, Jamal Crawford minus 4, in height right now as a comp. Thats a good player, but lets not overcomplicate the reason why he was #25 and not a top 15 pick. He absolutely CAN become a point guard and maybe he will prove he is in time relative to this list and not just a connector/finisher, which he is labeled now.

Thanks for sharing this one! People might sidestep NBA player endorsement .... But hey.... I'll put more trust in PG than what he was allowed to do as a freshman on a Tom Izzo team. Shoot... Him making it on the court alone is a blessing as a freshman. Would not be surprised if his role was simplified. "Defend and Score"

Shoot..... Tom Izzo texting Jeff to endorse his character and so on means a lot as well. We might literally have one of the steals of the draft.

Meh.

Just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't really say any of Sheppard, Dillingham or Wallace were considered high level point guard prospects in their respective drafts. Perhaps they flashed more point guard skills than Richardson did, but Michigan State already had Jeremy Fears who was a high recruit the year before Jase got there and he has more of that pure point guard skill set.

Izzo needed to use Jase more of a scorer for their team to be most successful, especially once they moved him into their starting lineup in the second half of the year.

And as far as the Jordan/Jamal Crawford comparisons... man...

Jordan C as a freshman averaged on a 9.7 PPG on a .533 TS%. It was 25 years ago, but Jamal C had just a .507 TS% in his lone college season.

You may think Jase has a similar play style to those guys, but he succeeded at levels so far beyond anything either one of those guys even came close to approaching. That stuff matters, right?

"Oh he's small, and he won't be able to score efficiently because of his size."

Well why not? He scored extremely efficiently in college at that size. Why wouldn't it continue? He clearly figured it out at the level he was playing at in ways plenty of other guys his size simply were not able to.

The question is can Jase drive to the right? If not, the defensive gameplan should be easy when he on the court. Not that he cannot still be effective.

Yeah, when I use those comparisons I’m not correlating them directly with stats or what they accomplished in college. Even you would argue his role in Mich State wasn’t what he would tell you in interviews was who he would be in the league.

I’m talking about their roles and what they are tasked with on a court relative to their skillsets. You are proving my point here by focusing on scoring efficiency as his selling point. I’m not disagreeing that he’s a gifted scorer and he’s efficient.

Regardless, Jase is a scorer first and it remains to be seen whether he is a 6’1 version of those players listed in comparison or if we are comparing him to Chris Paul at 6’0 because they happen to be the same height. You might as well at that point just for the sake of argument.

Someone could absolutely make the argument his role in Michigan State held him back from displaying his point guard abilities. Thats what he would sell to GMs as well and it might be the truth.

Are we making these arguments against his size being a valid concern because we list a bunch of random point guards from the last 2-3 seasons? Or was he the #25 pick, with an elite efficient scoring skillset, that despite that fact was selected later because it’s actually a problem?

Maybe we need to ask a non Magic mod on the Magic forum to know the answer.

Edit: I’m adding a lot of qualifiers here in attempting to show that it’s understandable what this kid is bringing with him without you thinking I’m not high on him as the #25 pick.

The answer is no right now. That's going to be one of the main things to watch in his development.

If he hasn't developed it by now, I doubt he can develop that much more going to the right at least to the point to be a threat.
