Re: Who Belongs on Mavericks' Mount Rushmore?
That's a good question. Obviously Dirk. Best player and draft to retire 20+ year career with Dallas.
It's hard to put Terry, Nash and Kidd there because half or more of their career wasn't here. Harper spent a few years as a Knick. I don't think Finley, Perkins or Blackman were that good. And Aguirre had issues. That means, for me, Luca is the only other one even though he could spend the next 10 years as a laker, lol. That said, Harper, Finley and Kidd are with us today in other roles.
So for me, Dirk, Luka and two of Kidd, Finley or Harper.
Kidd, has the checklist of draft, championship, coach but way too much of his prime career was in Phoenix and New Jersey.

Luka and Dirk are a slam dunk,
Mark Aguirre was a great player. I forgive the way he left after all these years. Nash and Kidd had their best seasons for other franchises. My fourth is a very close call between Rolando and Harper. I give a slight edge to Rolando even though Harper was great.

Kidd is key part of 3 WCF, 2 Finals and 1 ring, he has to be there.

Dirk Luka Jet Kidd. If adding one more, it will be Nash.
However THJ could have been there too.

Give me rings.
Dirk, Terry (I think some Mavs fans overrated Terry but he was an integral part of that championship... what he did in games 6 & 7 of the finals was huge, and he started the comeback in game 1). Kidd.
You can add Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion to the list for me. Maybe JJ Barea too.
Mark Aguire was a head case and was traded because of it. Traded for a very good but less talented player.
I loved Ro Blackman. Definitely a championship piece but unfortunately it did not happen here. He was a better player than Harper. Harper had gaping holes in his offensive game.
Luka's story is still being written.

Dirk
Luka
Kidd
I think those 3 you have to put up there. Kidd did take this team to 2 WCF's (hopefully more) as coach, and technically is the best player ever drafted by the Mavs since the other 2 were trades on that night.
The 4th is one of those things you put a bunch of name sin a hat and pick: Barea, Terry, Blackman, Harper, etc

Here is one........
Former NBA player and current Utah Jazz coach Jason Terry brought his basketball experience to Kansas City this week for his Relentless Basketball and Mental Health Camp for boys and girls at Hickman Mills Middle School. “There’s no bigger confidence than the confidence you have in yourself,” said Terry, who played in the NBA for 20 years for various teams.

With Mark Aguirre I think it ultimately came down to he wanted to win. His Mavs’ teams were perennial playoff losers.
I never knew how bad he felt about leaving Dallas though. It was interesting seeing how emotional he got when the fans cheered him.

Aguirre left Dallas in his prime and went from being the centerpiece to a role player in Detroit. Rings were more important to him than being the man. The 1981 was a very good draft for Dallas. Picked up Aguirre with the first pick and Blackman with the 9th pick. Blackman was the pick that Denver traded to Dallas for Kiki VanDeWeghe. Even though VanDeWeghe was booed every time he sat foot in Dallas, I think he did us a favor by refusing to play for the Mavericks.

I think that is why he got emotional. Even though I’m sure he loves his championship wins he never got the love from the Detroit fans like he did when he was in his prime in Dallas.
This was HIS team but he forced his way out. Even though he won titles it seems like he regrets leaving Dallas. I wonder if Luka will feel the same way even though he didn’t force his way out. Will he ever try to get back to Dallas (after the current regime is gone of course).
That’s why I value (and most Mavs fans too I’m sure) Dirk’s 1 title that someone like Labron or KD (or Aguirre) who ring chase. They chose titles over legacy and Aguirre seems to really regret it.

I wonder if Roy Tarpley's suspension much of a role in Aguirre wanting out. The Mavericks took the Lakers to 7 games in Western Conference finals in 1988. That Maverick team was stacked, but Tarpley got suspended in January 1989. I don't recall exactly when in the 1988-89 season that Aguirre started wanting out.

This all took place just before I started being a Mavs fan. From what I’ve been reading though Aguirre did not get along with the coach Dick Motta and also did not get along with Rolando Blackman. All of that was taking place between that ‘87-‘88 season and the ‘88-‘89 season. In ‘89 he was traded to Detroit. Detroit then won the title in ‘89.

John MacLeod. Not Motta. Motta left after 1986-87 season.

You are correct sir. It was John MacLeod not Dick Motta. Dick Motta did come back to coach but not until ‘94. My fandom started the year Quinn Buckner became the head coach. I believe that was also Jim Jackson’s rookie year.
