Because he can't shoot, can only go left, yup.

Also because while his driving/passing are good, sometimes the decision making is not. Like sometimes he will force passes in there, or force his drives and make mistakes, turn the ball over.

Also because he's very old and wasn't really on NBA team radars until this season..

He’s only 23. Yeah, I guess that’s older than a lot of guys coming out lately, but that’s still pretty young.

Yeah, those were the first clips I saw and was wondering about the D / mobility. But I’ll have to dig in more later.

For a draft pick, it's very old.

For draft picks, 18/19 is young. 20 is kind of young. 21 is kind of old..22 is old, 23 is very old.

It seems like most of the time, when he makes the effort to fly out there for a contest, the player misses. It’s like the Korny Kontest, you gotta do something to throw them off. Don’t just stand there in the paint looking. He literally can do it, but for some reason sometimes he just stand there. Part of it is he’s so worried about helping, lil ball watching.

Yeah. Maybe it won’t seem so old in the future because guys are playing much longer these days. It’s old because people have been done in their early 30s, guys like Al, CP3, KD and Bron types are stretching it out.

Oh yeah, gotta pay more attention to his man, most of the bigs in the NBA can shoot now. I get it, some of those guys that hit a couple shots can’t shoot, but in the NBA you’re not gonna be able to sit down in that paint like that.

Last post. They were getting those shots on the perimeter, but when they were trying to back him down for the most part, they had nothing for him!

My post from 6/19/25 from page 15 of draft thread:

"I've narrowed down my bigs list of who I want if they are there at 28 and 32, hoping we keep both 28 and 32.

1. Ryan Kalkbrenner
2. Johni Broome

I prefer these guys a little over Maxime Raynaud. Maxime Raynaud's defense isn't that good right now.
Also, I don't know much about Hansen Yang.

I don't think Thomas Sorber will be there at 28. Same with Wolf.

I feel Vladislav Goldin from Michigan and Amari Williams from Kentucky are underrated bigs."

kinda hyped myself for fleming so i'm bummed but i like the scouting report. We don't need him to score, just defend and rebound and finish at the rim. the make or break is going to be whether he can passably defend in space to challenge perimeter shots.

Amari Williams is center from Nottingham, England, who played the 2024-25 season with the Kentucky Wildcats after transferring from Drexel University. During his graduate season at Kentucky, Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 56.1 percent from the field. He started all 36 games, leading the team in rebounds and field goal percentage, and tied for the team lead in assists with 115, the most ever by a 7-footer at Kentucky. Williams achieved a rare statistical milestone, becoming only the second player in SEC history to record at least 375 points, 300 rebounds, 100 assists, 40 blocks, and 20 steals in a single season. He also posted 10 double-doubles, including eight in SEC play, and notched a season-high 22 points against Arkansas and 15 rebounds against Tennessee. Prior to his time at Kentucky, Williams was a standout at Drexel, where he was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time First-Team All-CAA selection.

Analysis
Williams is a physically imposing big man with a 7-foot-5 wingspan, known for his defensive prowess and basketball IQ. He excels as a rim protector and rebounder, using his length to alter shots and secure boards. His defensive versatility enables him to guard multiple positions effectively. Offensively, Williams is a capable playmaker from the high post, demonstrating strong passing instincts and vision. He serves as an effective facilitator, often initiating offense and finding open teammates. While not a primary scoring option, he is efficient around the rim and can finish plays as a lob threat. Williams’ leadership and unselfish play have been lauded by coaches and teammates.

Projection
Williams projects as a reliable rotational big man at the NBA level, capable of contributing as a defensive anchor and facilitator. His combination of size, defensive acumen and passing ability makes him an ideal fit for teams seeking a versatile center who can impact the game on both ends of the floor. A realistic NBA comparison for Williams is Jakob Poeltl of the Toronto Raptors – a tough and skilled center who contributes with defense, passing and efficient scoring around the basket. Currently, Williams is projected as a second-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

7’5” wingspan, great length.

If Hugo cuts, and this guy handles and passes, AND Baylor is out there doing his thang, then I think we’ll have some good times watching some bench lineups

I know that’s different than trying to set all-time differential records, but I thought it was a fine draft at first blush

He’s like a Point Center; great dribbles and passing for a big man.

Can definitely see him being a great guy off the bench and having a long career. Maybe can work on his shooting but has every other quality to have a long career.

As per the other thread, he's from Nottingham, he's tall, and he helps others.

Clearly then, he should be known as Little John.

I didn’t watch as much tape as ShakCelts, but generally like what I see and what I have read. He has the tools and skills to be a very versatile NBA center. He is 23 so there are ups and downsides about that. I am excited about him.
What makes or breaks guys is work ethic. It takes an exceptional work ethic to be an NBA player. I hope he has it!!!

Read on Twitter

Worth noting that we drafted Amari and we also worked out Otega Oweh and Jaxson Robinson..all 3 of them played for Kentucky last season.

This continues a trend where the Celtics like acquiring young players from the SEC. Others: Springer, Grant Williams, Time Lord, Walsh, Davison, etc.

Amari Williams was a great pick overall.
I love a big physical big man who gathers rebounds and loves to pass the ball.
FUN player
If his skill level improves and if he has a strong work ethic, he could be an impact player someday

Eventually he'll replace Queta, who will be traded or waived...

Agreed. Amari may end up being a Queta replacement and Hugo may end up being a Walsh replacement.

Both Walsh and Queta have partially guaranteed contracts for this season.
