Masai Ujiri is out as Vice Chairman and President of the Toronto Raptors, sources tell ESPN's Shams Charania.

The Raptors are expected to conduct a full search for the next president of basketball operations, sources added.

His departure comes a day after the conclusion of the NBA's draft and just before free agency begins on Monday.

The Raptors went 30-52 this past season and missed the postseason for the third straight year.

Ujiri, who was in the final year of his contract, joined the Raptors as general manager in 2013, leading Toronto to the franchise's only NBA title in 2019.

People obsess over draft picks and such, but the real difference Masai made was pushing all the other staff. Better practice facilities, better scouting resources, better health and conditioning etc. He helped to create a top tier basketball operation when the Raps were a laughing stock and largely ignored by their own ownership.

I don't know. This franchise was a huge joke around the league before MU. That CMB viral reaction to being drafted feels like a sign of things to come.

So much for having non whites in Toronto's pro sports C-Suite room.

Masai was an inspirational leader and advocate for our city. It feels right now he is irreplaceable. Even if we can bring someone that could build a winner, that person likely won't have the impact on the fan base and the city that Masai did.

Atlanta apparently deserves Antholopoulos and Masai more than Rogers thinks we do.

This is their way of getting back at us for the 92 World Series

That was that idiot Bobby Cox's mistake of taking Deion Saunders out of Game 7 after he went 3 for 3 at the plate. Don't blame Toronto!

I was worried that Rogers was another idiot owner like Ishiba, and if so, this confirms it.

Him running the Jays into the ground confirmed it.

Michael Bradley wrote:As mentioned, Shapiro is getting a lot of rope from ownership because he was hired by Ed Rogers. Masai obviously was not so this was inevitable. The key to this is going to be who they get to replace Masai.

Theres no replacement. Bobby is top dog now. Basically business as usually without President. Leafs got rid of Shanaplan but kept the GM.

This felt inevitable with how many mistakes Masai did since the Tampa Szn but it still feels bittersweet.

Not really upset at him getting fired, more so just nervous for the future. It was time to part ways anyways.

Who knows on future FO changes right now, but this is where you learn where the disagreements were between Bobby/whoever/Masai.

Seems to be a pretty good consensus on trading RJ, and IQ/Jak were also in rumours. Doubt we'll actually hear any rumours about Barnes, but paths are open now.

Masai specifically had a ton invested in Jak, possibly clouding judgement. Reminds me of the Colangelo/Bargs era and how that ended pretty quickly once the FO changed.

So Keith Pelley is the guy we’re going to hate now. I looked up his resume and the guy is a former Rogers media executive. Shocker. Let’s hope he knows ball :nonono:

WTF does a media exec know about the landscape of the NBA?!

I don't know what the current valuation of the Raptors is but here's hoping Rogers is not a cheapskate when it comes to the franchise. Bobby probably doesn't survive past a couple years.

Yes, the idea that he's been a top-tier GM post-chip is nonsense. People wanted the Masai of last decade to helm the team. We never got that.

So pretty much what you’re saying is Masai isn’t a top tier ship because of pretty much 1 year where he didn’t rebuild when he maybe should have?

He’s made immensely more good moves than bad moves. Even in the last 12 months with grabbing JKW/Shead/Mogbo/Battle, getting Ingram for cheap, etc.

Yall just haven’t seen the fruits of the last 18ish months yet so don’t appreciate it.

Rating the Ingram move before the guy has played even 1 game and is a known injury-prone player is ridiculous. Man you fell off as a poster.

Getting a guy who has a legit chance at being an all star for the equivalent of a mid 20s pick (NOP got 23 for it) this year is a great trade even if it doesn’t work out.

The risk is worth it - you can always evaluate by outcomes and results. Sometimes great processes end poorly, and bad process somehow works out great.

That’s why you lol at en entire body of work. Masais is near the top in the league. Maybe in league history.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.
