Challenge - Turn Klay into a Stopgap PG

Post#1 » by daoneandonly » Fri Jun 27, 2025 11:42 am

Is this one possible, whether its straight up, multiple players and/or teams, can Dallas turn Klay into a PG to man the show and maybe even play with Ky when he returns

Team Reason: Dallas needs a guy that can handle and facilitate, no reason to make life hard on your new rookie
My Reason: Klay's diva attitude about starting, and why in the world does this team insist on having 3 key players on the roster who are old enough that they could have gone to elementary school with me. I'm old as can be, they're not too far behind

I like Smart, but Dallas cant give up both of their playable SG's in one trade. Not that it matters, but Christie was the only halfway decent thing about the Luka trade besides watching Maxi Kleber's stone cold fear of shooting and playing through injuries

Klay to DEN for Nnaji/Saric/min contract/2nd, add Hardy, and PHI 2nd, and send to WAS for Smart.
WAS can take them into TPE/MLE and generate 21M TPE.

Isn't Dallas just going to sign D-Lo?

Klay/Powell for Anthony/Clarke?

They want to. But at just the TMLE I'll assume they have competition. Though they may have an edge in that they can promise him a starting role?

But more interesting to me is we see all these threads on these guys who are terrific spacers but not good defenders (sorry I don't buy the Hauser narrative fully) where the fans all believe they can move the guy for value.

Mavs fans have accepted they overpaid Klay, but I'm starting to think if all these other threads are right, then Klay shouldn't be seen as this super negative contract.

Also back to the thread, I don't think Smart is the answer. Oh he'd be worth a gamble as a member of the rotation but he's more a defensive wing than a PG at this point. And certainly not at the loss of more shooting.

Now if you trade for Smart and sign Russell, maybe?

I'd be okay with this, not sure the Grizz would

Not sure what the incentive is for Washington in any of these deals. We are choked at SG with Tre Johnson, CJ McCollum, Corey Kispert, AJ Johnson, and Will Riley (plus Carrington and Smart who are looking like our PG rotation along with CJ and maybe AJ). Additionally, Klay's still got 2 years left on his deal and the trades we've made are all aligning to have all our aging vets expire this year giving us big cap space next year to leverage.

Not sure how to convert Klay into an expiring, but if you could cheaply - I have to imagine one of Smart or CJM is available for a distant 2nd. Or cash/savings..

That’s actually really interesting for both teams.

I was playing with.. Dallas trying to create value by taking on Nnaji’s third year?

Nnaji and Ayo to Dallas
Klay to Denver
Saric, Pickett, Tyson, cash/2nds to Chicago

But I feel like Denver owes more than just the one second they can trade? Say tying in OKC and asking Presti for 2-3 seconds for a 2026 swap of his worst first for Denver first? Washington has a worse 2026 first and they own way too many seconds.

I know he's small and a rookie, but I think Ryan Nembhard is going to stick as a stopgap PG

I feel like a stop gap PG is one thing you can find in the free agent market. Dlo, CP3, the Jones brothers, Brogdon, Shroder, Russ.

Yea I like the premise provided Denver puts in more value. Dallas needs 2nds, and needs them now

Klay to Boston
Simons to Dallas
Marshall and Hardy to a third/4th team with 2nd rounders.
Alternatively could be Martin instead of Marshall.
Also alternatively the smaller contracts worth 14-15 million in 2025/26 go to Boston and Klay goes to a third team….

Would definitely rather do this than lose Gafford in similar idea..

I’d like Gafford, but I feel like the Celtics brass favors flexibility more.
