I thought the Lakers had to trade Divac to Charlotte because they needed to clear cap space to sign Shaq? So essentially Charlotte was picking for the Lakers at the draft?

Very funny if he pulls a Steve Francis. He ain't the prospect Francis was either. His career never panned out, but god damn was Stevie talented.

Reminds me a little bit of the Fultz situation with TOS.

Austin Reaves wasn’t a consensus top 5 pick like Ace. Reaves was an older rookie who a couple of teams would have liked to pick in the late 2nd, but respected his wish to not get drafted.

Teams ironically don’t care about the wishes of a top 5 prospect most of the time.

Injuries killed Francis’s career though. Certainly not due to lack of talent, IQ or work ethic. His first 4-5 years was a great player.

I posted this over on the Wiz board but I'll copy it here.

AFM wrote:I agree with all of that Consig except I don't think he's more talented than Tre at all. He's a scorer but shoots 69% from the line?

He also measured in at 6'7 after being listed at 6'10 all year. So he'll be listed at 6'8, not 6'10.

I said the same over at the general board, but exactly HOW is he a better prospect than Tre? Oh I know. Because he LOOKS like one--ie theres more footage of him dunking on people.

His basketball IQ is significantly lower. He's not a great shooter. He's awful from the line. He's got a poor handle.

Tre Johnson is the hardest worker in the draft class. Ace Bailey when asked what his weaknesses are? "I don't got any weaknesses, big dawg." Meanwhile Tre was humbled by the footage of him slacking on D that Dawkins showed him. Said it inspired him. But Ace is the better prospect?

I don't get it. At all.

Like I said. He reminds me of so many busts. Shabazz Muhummad. We all repeat he's some great prospect, mostly because we've heard it from others. No way we're all wrong, right?

He seems the most likely bust I've seen in a long, long time.

All this and not factoring in the massive difference in work ethic and attitude.

I don't get it.

I don't think he's a FA if he decides to skip this year in the draft. He just goes in the draft again.

If he decides to play overseas, the Jazz retain his draft rights as well IIRC.

That said it sounds like this was all overblown and won't matter. At least I hope it won't matter.

He'd have been more interesting in today's game. Trying to float a team as a small scoring guard at the time was pretty rough. He was mostly athleticism and attitude, too, lacking a lot of classic PG skills. He was also fading by 04, before he started chaining injuries together... and he was always a turnover factory.

Bust written all over him. Does nothing very well, 2000’s throwback, seeming attitude/maturity issues.

Obviously he could put it together but I just don’t see it.

Sure if he wants to kill a full year riding on busses for the G league or playing in a country he doesn't know the language of.

He disrespected the process. Disrespected the teams. Wanted to dictate where he went as a player who has done nothing to earn that. Pouted his way through the draft.

Don’t trade him. Fine him every day he fails to report (when it’s mandatory to do so) until he reports. Lay the fn hammer Ainge.

He is probably not signing with them, so no fines. But Ainge aint soft, he could just hold this kids rights than admit defeat. I hate the fact players cant decide where to play, but it is private league with such rules, so dont want to play in the nba... fine, good luck. Pretty telling that the kid is 19 and he already thinks he can dictate the world around him. Will be fun cheering against this punk.

They could have traded the pick or chosen a different player. Elway, Eli publicly pulled this in the NFL. Numerous players have quietly did this in the NBA. I imagine it only got public because he let his wishes be known and salty organizations decided to smear him in the media instead of working with him behind the scenes. Now Utah has even less leverage should he refuse to report and allowing him to get away with it will result in a pissing contest. Ace would have to sit out or play overseas and re-enter the draft next year to follow through on his threats. This could get interesting

If he doesn't want to follow the rules, he shouldn't have entered the draft :banghead: . He could have proved himself in the G league or overseas for a year and then signed with anyone he wants.

You need to go through draft to enter the league as FA...

So how do you do that, if team drafts you? I mean all players would prefer to enter NBA as FA, you can't do that if you didn't go through draft proccess. The year you turn 22, every person in the world is eligible to be drafted by NBA team, so even if Bailey does not enter draft, he would be drafted by someone sooner or later.

Not a big fan of the kids game. But I don’t know if I’d call him a punk from what I’ve seen. It’s just clear he’s gotten some bad advice.

In general, im not against players using whatever leverage they have in a business context. Just have to understand exactly what you’re doing and be ready to accept the consequences. To me, this all stems from a lack a confidence in his talent.
