Still, it is arguable Cronin could have just waived him and kept the 2 second rounders. It worked for DA.
But Banton is not a playmaker PG and seems like just a scoring guard whose D is not good. He's a nice wrinkle as a 4th or 5th guard on the cheap.
Instead, they now have a top defender at guard, albeit at age 35, who can run the O, play real defense, and play at both guard positions because he can friggin' D and hit some shots. He won't be taking shots or crucial time away from anyone on the roster who can play. Scoot and Sharpe can get theirs so long as they earn their dinner.
It's not a clear-cut answer. BUT Jrue Holiday will be good for 2-3 years, his $$$ come off the cap in the summer of '28 AND a contender is likely to come calling before then.
Fan seem to have a hard time understanding the Jrue move, so I’ll demystify it:
I really feel like the Blazers hit points last year where they were hitting their head against a wall with Scoot and Sharpe’s development. They both are so immensely talented with some really bad nagging habits. Jrue not only gives this team that defensive identity, and a stable force in a very young starting lineup, but a person in the locker room (who ISNT a coach) that will feel comfortable calling out and helping correct some of these bad habits in our young players. Players these days only listen to coaches so much.
I firmly believe that’s why the team got rid of Ayton for nothing. Jrue can’t do much with a player like that and it sends the wrong message if the team is changing the culture and one of their stars is openly flaunting it.
I’m honestly not sure if the team will be better next season in the short term, but that may not be the goal. I think their short term goals are first and foremost getting Scoot and Shaeden on better tracks, pushing the chips in on a high tempo offense and suffocating defense, extending Camara, getting Yang NBA reps, seeing how far Avidja can progress as a number 1 option, and throwing Clingan into the fire as an everyday starter. Anything beyond that is gravy.
