Re: Shams: Raptors re-sign Garrett Temple (1yr/3.6mil)
Raptors will now start the season with 14 fully guaranteed contracts assuming Alijah Martin gets the same rookie deal as Shead.
They also will have to run a 14-man roster instead of 15 to stay under the tax if they stand pat with the rest of the roster in the offseason.
The only way they would have been able to run a 15-man roster was if all of the remaining signings other than CMB were rookie minimum guys, which isn't possible anymore now that they brought back Temple.

Blake Murphy seemed to think we could still sign one more minimum guy, but maybe I read his tweets incorrectly

Caruso is still only 31 with 7 years in the league. Same amount of years as Jak. Caruso has been in much bigger games than Jak but Garrett really hasn't. He's basically been a 15 year scrub, who is still in the league for reasons other than his play. Just make him an assistant coach if you want him around.

i think that's the point. he's been a guy who had to work hard to stick around in the NBA, and that's important showing others around how to get things done

Have you ever been on an organized team? If you have you would know the difference between a coach and a teammate. It doesnt matter if hes 31 or 37 hes been in playoff battles and hes won a championship, younger players are going to listen to what he has to say. Temple might not have won anything or might not have been a star but if players respect his voice and hes a positive influence i dont see the problem. How can you sit behind a keyboard and pretend you know what its like being in the locker room?

I guess I just think our team needs players. If this gets a guy like Lawson cut, I'm not a fan of the move.
If the team loves them some Garrett as much as this board, I will just believe that they really need the guy around, and concede the point.

you have to be under tax at deadline, not start of season. lots of time to get under tax, at deadline you can dump temple or someone + cash to a team to get under tax.

I played college ball man... We didn't have a 40 year old teammate in the corner talkin bout "Hey young fella". I haven't been in the raps locker room. These guys couldn't remember that he was on the team last year if they made him a coach? He's just a stiff in a suit now?

1/18 spots, we can live with that.
Doesn’t this put us almost exactly at the tax? We don’t even have a backup C yet.
Ed “Masai is too expensive” Rogers is now going to pay the tax for a 7th seed? It feels like there has to be more roster moves coming.
We will be under the tax, right now Lawson & Castleton occupy 4.5-5mill against the cap, they will be waived at some point

If you played college ball, then I'm sure you had a Sr on your team, he would be our Sr, Srs don't really play in the NBA unless you're a HOF

He's a 5* player coach and a great vet for a young team.

I doubt they would put themselves in another Dragic-type situation and leverage themselves. But they could do something like hold onto Castleton as an extra C to fill the 15th spot for a bit, then cut him when they're right up against the tax and he'll only have a prorated dead cap hit reflecting the percentage of the season he was on the roster.

Like I said further up this thread. I would just hope Jak and Ingram could be those guys on this team. Quick, RJ and Scottie have all been around the block too. If they need temple they need him. I would rather keep Lawson around ideally.

Re: Shams: Raptors re-sign Garrett Temple (1yr/3.6mil)
I am a bit surprised... they really have to figure out the backup C situation before the season starts. We briefly had a backup C with Olynyk on the roster and now that's gone again. I thought Temple would be brought back as an assistant coach this year but whatever.

We are trying our absolutely hardest not to have centers on this team.
Maybe Bobby needs to go too.
People often think there is logic to these moves, when in fact they are just dumb.

This makes no sense. If you want to keep him around, just sign him as an assistant role and instead sign a big to the vet minimum. He plays a total of 20 mins all season, what's the point of having him take a roster spot?

Everyone on the roster last year had high praises for him when talking about the team and the coaches love him as well, a very good vet. He will be an assistant coach when he retires but for note he wants to keep playing. Nothing wrong with this signing, it is a very good signing.
