I was watching Collin Murray-Boyles, and he has the same kind of game.

Watching highlights/game tape and their profiles there are differences.

CMB - Offensively attacks the paint consistently. He plays within the Arc as he doesn't have a 3 point shot. More effective Offensively than Penda as hes hard to guard mid range in. Hes very similar to like a Zion, Giannis where hes a great finisher at high volume and has an array of moves.

Hes a weaker passer than Penda as Penda can pass the ball from pretty much every attack point/space from the court. CMB typically is able to rifle it from the post at a decent rate.

I think defensively CMB has more of the edge as hes able to stay locked in while Penda typically gets lost from time to time. But Penda is able to roam around in a way that CMB is unable to do. CMB sticks to his man a lot closer while Penda doesn't.

Overall defensively I think its really a wash on depending on what you want to do defensively.

Now for Penda Offensively he isn't really particularly elite or good at anything. As a matter of fact hes a mediocre to below average Offensive player at best when it comes to scoring and shooting specifically.

Not a decent finisher, not a real post up threat, not a good mid range player, and is inconsistent but bad 3 point shooter. Plays more around the perimeter compared to CMB.

What makes him good to me is his ability to attack the basket at his size, and pass/handle the ball from anywhere on the court, cut to the basket, and hit the occasional 3 point shot to keep the defense honest. Just generally good decision making from a guy who has a good BBIQ. Physical guy who isn't shy about putting a hurting you (which contrast from CMB).

The style of play and size to me would be more optimal at the Center position if he developed into a decent/good player. He'd be like Brad Miller/Draymond Green-lite.

I'm just hoping it works out that way.

Thanks for your observation. Im curious though, CMB does not want to "hurt" you defensively?

For CMB he does get physical... but its more like Paolo when he'll use it to get buckets. Compared to Penda, he will bang with every and any player on both sides of the court no matter if its in the paint or perimeter.

When I see him do this its to provide a mental edge. Hes an irritant.

It's like he has the weaknesses which are TDS strength and strengths that are TDS weakness......TDS doesnt have a jumpshot issue penda does......Penda doesn't have much of a strength/body issue TDS does.... I've seen Tristan get bodied by players smaller than him

Think you interchange the players. TDS the shot, Penda has the body.

Per 36 -

Murray-Boyles: 3.1 assist to 3.1 turnovers.
Penda: 3.6 assist to 2.3 turnovers.

But I'm not a fan of looking at stats in this situation. Given both guys play in 2 totally different leagues with different rules and culture. But eye test wise Penda is able to make all types of passes without him having much offensive gravity compared to Boyles who also has a higher usage rate.

Depending on a how you rate passes Boyles can be rated from decent to good. Seeing how Penda operates from all parts of the floor hes just a better playmaker/passer to me. Boyles just cleans him everywhere else offensively by a wide margin except for 3 point shooting.

It is hard to compare their stats because Penda was playing against some grown men. When Penda did play against kids his own age, he was way better.

I am very curious how they envision this kid long term.

Do they see him as a 3/4 or potentially more of just a 4 who could maybe play some small ball 5 in very limited doses?

Return to Orlando Magic
