He'll make less than taxMLE in a couple years. I think they recognize that if the core doesn't get it done this year, they're breaking it up and they weren't prepared to lose the offensive production provided by both Ty and Merrill (and I'm not sure keeping Ty was in the cards).
It's a movable contract if needed.
It's looking like it will come (at least a year, or three, too late) but failure next season means they absolutely have to make the big move with either Garland or Mitchell. Merrill is a guy that's going to fit in with any future or can be used to facilitate a variety of trades. There's no downside to this deal and it's going to look better every season it's in place.
