Personally feel like people are misinterpreting that clip. "...If he gets past Brooklyn, then yeah, so let me make my calls" could 100% also be taken as like, he already knew the Raptors had Maluach lower on their preference list cuz it was likely the Raptors didn't want a C at 9. So his calls and discussions would have been WITH teams like New Orleans and Brooklyn to not take Maluach, in which case he knew Phoenix could get him at 10 no problem.

my take is that - until Lebron is in the league - agents like Rich Paul will have influence in this league, as much as I loved Lebron during the 2010s where he basically dominated the league - I can't wait for him to retire, let someone else be in the spotlight for goodness sake...

I don't think Lebron retiring will make it go away, I'm guessing he's going to buy ownership in an NBA team and the influence will continue so he can win a championship as an owner.

We also know that it wasn't business as usual in that time. So if you know you're not sticking around...the choice of who the team takes at the draft would likely be left to those who will be around to see it through. My theory is that Maluach was a Masai pick and when he was told he wouldn't be around beyond the draft...he let go of that and let Bobby and Dan make the pick.
