Please find another team if this one is not to your liking. There has been enough negativity for multiple seasons.
The Utah trade doesn't make the Nurkic trade look that bad at all.
1. First off we got two essentially expiring contracts (due to the options) one of which we were able to use in the Mark Williams trade.
- reasoning: savings and trade flexibility. With Nurkic on the team it would be much more difficult to make offseason moves or to get below the second apron.
2. We got Richards back who is better than Nurkic at 1/4th the cost.
- reasoning: we have a better center at a bargain contract who we can easily get assets in return for if we chose to move him.
3. The first rounder we gave up will be after swaps from 4 teams, and we received a Charlotte second rounder in return. It is very possible that the difference in pick will be something like the Suns giving up the 25th and the Charlotte second becoming the 35th. Basically the Hornets traded up 10 spots late in the draft.
I'll criticize our front office with the best of them, but let's also not simplify past moves as "we gave up a first rounder to dump Nurkic" when the actual deal is far more nuanced.
