Best offer for Nick Smith Jr

Post#1 » by Man Strength » Mon Jun 30, 2025 3:13 am

Can’t take back player unless it’s a 2 for 1. Goal is to open a roster spot. NSJ odd man out in CLT.

Any takers for anything at all?

From what we have seen with recent transactions-> I highly doubt there is any value

I think the return is a marginal prospect at another position, or a couple 2nd rounders at best. He's a 6'2 guard that's a decent scorer and a good 3-point shooter, but nothing else, and those guys are EVERYWHERE.

Sexton is a much better version of the same guy and Utah had to send a 2nd with him to swap him for a worse player. I doubt he has any value

It's a bad sign that when I first read the thread my thought was - 'What team is he on again?'

I would include NSJ in a deal (with Salaün + Josh Green) for Nic Claxton.

+ 2 first round picks added for Clax.

Have to pay a second if you want his cap hit off your roster.

You might be lucky if you don't have to attach draft capital to trade him into cap space. He simply isn't a very good basketball player.

DAL can give you Omax straight up, and hopefully change of environment can help both both players perform better.

He's dirt cheap. So no real panic, but he probably deserves to be given a shot somewhere, he can be a good to great shooter.

Wouldn't it just make more sense to keep the draft capital and the 20 year old playing on a cheap contract who led his draft class in 3 PT efficiency his rookie year?

Doesn't take luck to figure that out.

Jett Howard...I'd like to reunite NSJ with Anthony Black and see if they both wake up as a reserve duo.

Howard can flat out shoot, when he's on-it's really impressive...he just can't get any traction in ORL and might flourish elsewhere...if not, no guaranteed money after this year. I think both are nice low-risk swings in a new environment.

Omax or Jett for NSJ feels like the kind of deal that would work best here. See if a new environment can help an underperforming guy break out.

Sure, Charlotte doesn't have any immediate need for cap space or roster spots so they shouldn't pay to dump him. But I agree with the general consensus that his value is closer to "you have to pay a 2nd to clear his cap hit" than "someone will give up assets AND a roster spot for him"

10/2/2 on 50% TS, negative BPM/VORP/WS as an undersized two guard whose only real skill is scoring. He could put it together eventually but the signs we've seen so far are that he's probably not an NBA player.

I have read this sentiment a few times…So either it was a bad trade by Utah or Nurkic is not a worse player.
Either way it doesn’t mean other players that are in a similar mold necessarily are going to need a pick attached to trade for a “worse” player.
If Smith Jr. is actually the worse player in a trade then sure, attach a second or two.

He just turned 21 and still on his rookie deal. He was a very highly rated prospect ( top 5 in his class, though we thought he was taller then). Big wingspan and athleticism so he could develop as a defender?
I don’t see him as a negative asset. I could see him being worth a second rounder in the right situation.

I think the problem here is that Charlotte is exactly the kind of team that should be giving Smith an opportunity to prove himself, since they invested a 1st round pick in him and they're not trying to win now. So what does it say that they're looking to dump him after year two? If they don't think he's even worth a roster spot, why should some other team give up assets for him?

Are they looking to dump him? Or is the OP just curious about his value.
Fair points though.
