WNBA Expanding to Philadelphia in 2030

Figured it’s worth a thread. I’ll be interested to see the branding and team name once details begin to take shape but I’ll be excited to have year round Philly basketball to watch with WNBA games in the summer.

That's cool. I'm not a WNBA fan but I'm not a hater either. I hope they do well here.

That's fine, but I do find expansion a strange tactic for a league that is still losing money.

Cash influx from new ownership groups buying into the league is probably the main story there. They also have a new media right deal kicking in next year that will spike revenue but we’ll see if that gets the league to profitability.

It’ll allow more women jobs to play the game they love and also make some money. The wnba is a bit strange when it’s cutting lottery picks, draft picks before they get started. You hold a whole event of getting drafted which brings out emotions in making it to the next level. Then you’re jobless. From roster restriction to teams holding onto older players vs adding the youth. Expansion will help I think with this.

Be interesting to see where Dawn Staley is at in her career. Maybe she coach’s Philly. But I’d like to see her in the NBA.

Caitlin Clark's stats are crazy. 40% FG <30% from 3, 6 TOs per game. What a weird league.

From everything she's indicated, she's perfectly happy at South Carolina so I can't imagine her leaving that job anytime soon.

Glad we're getting one.

Wish they were playing in Center City!

I just went to the Real Madrid match at the Linc and I have never had more confirmation in my beliefs that the nightmare area we call the South Philly Sports Complex is a failed experiment that needs to be dismantled and turned into housing. The amount of time I was stuck in a parking lot, that is presumably able to handle two sporting events at once, was so egregious and infuriating. The fact that there is no hope for having the Sixers/WNBA team in Center City is pathetic. Sorry, was just reminded of this since a WNBA team was rumored to be coming after they pulled the rug on a CC arena.

Who knows 5 years from now. Which is when Philly will be getting a team.

This. Abandoning the center city site to remain in the turrible sports complex was such a bad decision.

Yet another reason Josh Harris is a disgrace and an embarrassment. Bent over for Silver again!!!

They need a site that is good for both public transit and for driving/parking.

And she's the best player in the league (at least the most dynamic). Which is why I will never ever sit down to watch an entire WNBA game. the product is pretty terrible overall. I don't see how they grow and become mainstream and profitable. Once Caitlin is done if there's not another Caitlin 2.0 in the wings they will lose money hand over fist like pre Caitlin. But in the meantime, hey if they can make some money and whatever, have at it.

I find the WNBA to be a solid product when watching the upper tier teams play. That Lynx/Liberty game this week was good and the Finals last year were very entertaining. The guards and forwards are definitely becoming more skilled and players like Napheesa Collier (the actual best player in the league) are worth watching imo.
