Re: Shams: JJJ R+E 5y $240MM
How much cap space do they really need for a 5yr240? If they don’t mind keeping most the money on the back but that would feel like a wasted opportunity.
Like if they felt Aldama was getting offers they didn’t want to match, all they have to do is renounce him to get close enough to make this work.. would feel like a wasted opportunity, but possible.
I love it for JJJ either way..
And it’s either an A or an A+ depending on if they bring him to his max this year or not. Locking up a young talent like that is worth an A, but would be waste to not trim a couple million off his back few seasons.
Edit - aldama resigned. So seem to need to dump salary either way..

Yep, All-NBA caliber guys get a lot of money.
Takes a big big name off the market for next season.
With big names forcing trades whenever they want these days it kind of feels like free agency is coming to an end.

About $18MM by my count to hit a starting salary of $41.38MM + $3.31MM raises each year.

Yeah. I’m hoping they dump Clarke and Cole and bring him to his max this season (or closer to it)

They're saying it's a renegotiate and extend - gotta have cap space to do that. So considering they resigned Aldama - his cap hold is $11.88M. I think they have to clear about $13M to make this work
Edit (that $13M is in addition to the about $5M in cap space they already have)

Player option on last year. So the dreams of a lower back end contract are dead.

Cole Anthony to no longer be a Grizzlie in some fashion to help facilitate this.

Memphis ends up having access to the RMLE instead of the NTMLE.

We can extend up to 140% off this year's new salary. So could be quite a bit lower than 41 this year.

sounds like it's going to be a buyout, and then presumably a stretch on the buyout number?
investigate Adam Silver

Still an A to lock him up for the extra years below his max. But a wasted opportunity

30% of cap on the new estimated $170,112,000 cap is $51,033,600. If the graph above is correct he is getting roughly 5m less a year on years 2-5 than his eligible max. So a discount, but not the backend discount some were hoping for. Player option stinks but it might be why he took a little less.
