Like it for both teams. Johnson was probably better than MPJ last year and Denver gets some much needed flexibility. The pick has a decent chance to be post-Jokic, so a nice get for the Nets.

Lakers happy MPJ is in the East now. MPJ is a Laker killer. That dude turns into prime Ray Allen when he plays vs Lakers

Good short term move. Saves money while getting a guy who gives you like 90% of what MPJ gives you and should be a plug and play guy. Also love it for Brooklyn, getting a juicy unprotected 2031.

I get your point , Nets could’ve easily trade Cam Johnson to the Knicks for another 7 unprotected FR Picks

Problem is Knicks doesn’t have any FRPs left

It’s not that MPJ is a scrub. It’s that he’s overpaid, injury prone, and the only thing he does is shoot. It’s really hard to win with a player like that making the kind of money he makes in the new CBA.
I don't disagree on the overpaid part at all but he's still a solid starter in this league, just making way more than he should be. As for injury prone, he's plays 77 and 81 games in the last two seasons, he has actually been one of the most available players last two years.

I just don't understand the Nets desire/need to move Johnson for more salary and a first 7 years in the future. He's on an incredible contract and is in the middle of his prime so he's both a great value, trade chip, mentor for young kids and solid vet in case the Nets surprise and contend quicker than thought. Why rush and trade him at this point? And for MPJ? It just doesn't make any sense. Just more proof that small market teams (as they sit now, obviously they're a potentially huge market) act as farm systems for contenders with stars.

Cam Johnson's problem is games played, he averages 57/season and his most is 66/82

Porter has played back to back 81 and 77, but he makes a lot more than his impact.

Denver doesn't do it if not for the money saving, Nets is not for the pick, works for both in a sense, but there is caution for a contending team like Denver with a guy who misses even more games. MPJ played 9 games one season, and outside of his first season where he missed all games, averaged 57.5 games, so the same.
I'm talking more about the people who are dismissing their games, not factoring in their injury records. Yeah of course Cam J has injury concerns but last two years on the Nets, part of it has also been tank/development driven.

I should have clarified my reasoning. Obviously, for the Nuggets, they needed to cut costs while maintaining a team that can compete in Jokic's window. Cam improves their defense and doesn't sacrifice much on offense. Overall on the court and financial win. For the Nets, they need to be stacking assets well into the future so they can maybe field a .500 team by 2035 :D

Spoiler:
In seriousness, I think they feature and flip MPjr.

bad trade for Denver imo. gotta get more depth than a 1 v 1 swap.

If Denver gets Herb Jones, the top of the West with Oklahoma City, Houston and Denver will be very strong, and Minnesota is really good, too.

Denver saved like $17 million in salary per year

Giving away a completely unprotected first rounder when your star player is long gone is crazy to me.

That was my first reaction too, but I’ve reversed course and can 100% get behind the Nuggets thinking.

Nikola Jokic only comes around once. Don’t look back and wonder what could’ve been.

The Warriors had an all-time great, tried to get cute straddling the present and the future, and pissed away the remaining years of Steph’s prime when they could’ve used those Kuminga picks to put more win now pieces around him. They may have squandered another title in the process.

Denver just gave the new champs all they could handle with an injured MPJ, eventually injured Gordon, and basically no bench. If Cam can be healthy for the playoffs, and the cap savings help them fill-in some depth, Denver is right there.

Don’t piss away the rest of Joker’s prime cause you’re worried about some kid who is currently a 6th grader.
