You need depth, youth and athleticism to win in the modern NBA. "Minimum pieces" aren't going to cut it anymore. And you're overlooking just how severe and punitive the second apron penalties are for the front office's ability to make moves. So yeah, you might technically still be able to put two "tier 1" guys together, but there's a good chance that the results will be a disappointment compared to just building a strong overall roster like OKC and Indiana did.

I was going to say that I can’t believe a front office would fail to clear this with Giannis first, but they do employ Doc Rivers. Fair play, universe.

Who's the best guard/wing Milwaukee could get for Kuzma, Pat C, 2031 1st unprotected, and whatever other swaps/"worst of" picks they have left?
Sacramento comes to mind.. they have a load of combo guards/SG's
Not any worth a 2031 1st though
Simons/Hauser? If only

Truly the move of the century if this causes Giannis to ask out.
I bought a boat.

Even with how questionable Horst has been as a GM, I have a hard time believing he'd make a move this consequential without running it by Giannis first. The national media can't hide their desperation to get Giannis to a larger market, so I'd take any report like this with a grain of salt.

I don't think Dame would go back to Milwaukee.

Re: Shams: Turner to MIL
This is a big pickup for Mil. By itself it's the best value for a significant FA this summer. Not a big fan of the huge waive and stretch in general but they were desperate.
I can't believe that Indy wouldn't go above $20M/yr for Turner. That's insanely low for a quality starting center that has a fit that essentially every team wants. If it's just the owner being extra cheap that's very sad. Maybe they felt they could brazenly low-ball due to the lack of cap space.

Yeah and also - What's Giannis supposed to say if asked - "F that guy, get him out of here!" lol

No. A team can't re-sign a player for as long as his dead money is on the books.

Not during this remainder of the original contract that is stretched. So not during this 25/26 season nor the 26/27 season.

I thought that must be it, would be too easy to abuse otherwise

We did 3 years ago. Honestly, it's a fun cycle.
2020: Good Season, Bounced in Bubble
2021: Tried to build on 2020, didn't work, bad coach hire, etc
2022: Tank
2023: Acquire a star (Haliburton)
2024: ECF
2025: NBA Finals
Instead of turning 2026 into 2021, they hopefully learned and are jumping straight into 2022.

I really don’t see anything wrong with Giannis politely saying he’d rather have Turner on the team than Dame. They’re trying to win. Even if it leaks, the injury gives him an out.

With the cap going up the way it is, I think the sweet spot is 2 max guys + a good collection of role players and secondary/tertiary "stars" on good contracts or rookie deals
The "superteam"/"stars and scrubs" model basically doesn't work in the apron era.
