We don't have to worry about acquiring a starting calibre 5 for the next half-decade.

Well worth the money.

This year
Option year
3 year extension.
Really he’s only extending 3 more years but we have him for 5

Oh damn! I assumed it was kicking in next year.

Love this deal then.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Yup, but bad 3 point shooting in the PO’s didn’t stop them from winning a title.

Of the bottom defensive teams, only one (Denver) made playoffs, they were 9th worst (compared to Orlando being dead last in 3 point shooting). The top 14 teams in defensive efficiency all made playoffs.

So question is with internal improvement, adding Ingram, staying healthy, trades (e.g. RJ), can Raptors can eventually get to ~#15 in 3 point shooting and ~top 5 in defense - is it enough to contend.

That doesnt really mean too much. Being bad in anything is an obstacle to overcome. Of the bottom 10 in 2pt% only 3 made the playoffs. The 10 most turnover prone teams only 3 made playoffs. Of the bottom 14 defenses only 1 made the playoffs. And if you look at volume, 5 of the bottom 10 teams in 3 pointers made per game made the playoffs

Not to mention that it’s also incredibly reductive to say “well OKC didn’t shoot well so that means you can win a title without shooting”.

There is a big difference between missing shots and never being guarded in the first place. Chet shot 30% from 3 but he’s still being guarded nearly 100% of the time from 3 because he’s a proven shooter. Compare that to someone like Barnes, who (if we ever make the playoffs) is going to get left wide open on 3’s and it’s going to compromise our entire offense because the paint will be clogged. Same with Poeltl. Same with CMB. By themselves it might be fine but we’re going to see the real downsides of having 2 non-shooters on the floor and it’s going to surprise a bunch of people on this board who don’t seem to think it will be an issue come playoff time.

3pt shooting value isn’t just about fg%. It’s about commanding defensive attention such that it helps the rest of your team.

Surprised he wasn't highly sought after by the big teams. Great deal for us.

Good news for us… I guess? Last season we were in the bottom every category you listed above. Seems like a lot of obstacles.

Yup watching our team play with no starting calibre center for half a decade made me want to poke my eyes out. One of the reasons I wanted masai gone. Now that hole is fixed the team will be much more enjoyable to watch.

Like who? The Lakers? They don’t have the cap space nor is Poeltl the type of C you’d ideally want with Luka.

If you look around the league there are maybe 7 teams who would view Poeltl as a clear upgrade. Everyone else already has a C who is better or who they likely think is Poeltl-adjacent.

We played without a starting calibre C for half a decade? It was a 2.5 season gap between marc and jak lol

Hyperbole to the max.

We had no staring level C for 2.5 years. During that period we won 2 playoff games.

Playoff games played with Poeltl: 0

Poeltl is a fine player but why are we acting like this is some huge win? All this hand wringing over needing a starting C and when we finally got one it has led us absolutely nowhere.

I'm very exited to extend with the Toronto Raptors until 2030! I think we have built a really cool team over the last years and we are still getting better. I believe in the commitment of management aiming to get back to the playoffs. I feel extremely comfortable in Toronto and I think we have the best fans of the NBA. Happy Canada Day! #JP19

OKC took more wide open 3's (23/game) than the Raptors last year (18.8/game). OKC shot 39.1%, Raptors shot 38.7%

In the playoffs, OKC shot 17.5 wide open threes per game at 40.6%. Their playoff numbers are closer to the Raps than compared to their regular season numbers.

It's likely in the regular season, teams were paying a lot more attention to Shai in the mid-range/paint rather than staying at home on 3 point shooters. In the playoffs, better defensive teams starting locking up on their 3 point shooting. Raptors didn't have much of an interior threat compared to Shai, making it harder for them to generate wide open shots in the regular season.

Contract as % of the cap:
25-26 = 12.5%
26-27 = 11.5%
27-28 = 14%
28-29 = 13.5%
29-30 = 13% ($5m guaranteed)

Note that the MLE hovers between 9%-10% each year. This is a fantastic deal - he gave us 26-27 which solves our cap issues and all it took was a 2 year extension below what Jarrett Allen signed for, with a 3rd year option ticket FOR US. But of course because we did it, everyone is going to **** on it while nodding approvingly at Naz Reid's 5/$125 with a player option.

Solid deal, he's instrumental to this team moving forward 29 yrs old and just entering his prime for Centers.

Return to Toronto Raptors
