Re: 2025 Offseason Free Agency Thread
Look, I get it.
A lot of teams are out there aquiring new pieces and we're left with some uninspiring re-treads and it can bring down the excitement level.
Try to keep an eye on the prize, though. We have an elite, youthful backcourt. There's some good freaking times ahead. We got this.

I'm completely on board with a S&T of Grimes since I have no idea what his true value actually is after going nuts last year. If he could yield us a starter level PF, then I'd pull the trigger immediately.

Re: 2025 Offseason Free Agency Thread
With Gordon back here's the current roster assuming Grimes is signed:
PG Maxey | McCain | OPEN
SG Grimes | Edge | Gordon
SF Oubre | Edwards | Council
PF George | Watford | Broome
CE Embiid | Bona | Drummond
That is a full 14-man roster since we typically don't have 15 until late in the season.
Still hoping we can dump Drummond but not optimistic. Although if we do it's probably just to open a spot for Lowry lol.

Back to the lottery we go. Draft another 6'3 guard next year.

He’d fit seamlessly next to Embiid, Boone, and Bona, and he’d also be great for our guards too because he can space the floor and be an effective screener due to his scoring threat. If you have him at PF, you can even now slide Grimes and Edwards to SF. The problem is, he’s expensive, and the Grizzlies seem to value him highly, maybe even more than Ja Morant.
I never watched him play much outside of against us, but why is he such a terrible rebounder at 6'10 and his position? Less than 6 rpg for a career average is brutal.

Dire PF situation, even w/George getting healthier.

Except no pick next year. OKC owns it unless the Sixers make the commercial on draft night again.

Are we expecting the entire team to be injured again?

If you whine about it more, we might make the playoffs.

It's top 4 protected the next two years right? If some how we keep the pick both years they get nothing? Or a second?

Every day that goes by without Grimes news increases the odds that a S&T is being negotiated somewhere.

What team would do a sign and trade who hasn’t signed a shooting guard already? I think it more so means he would play on the qualifying offer and test free agency next season the longer he takes. He really has no leverage unless Brooklyn pays him which would be weird seeing that they have to pay Cam Thomas. Outside of Brooklyn throwing a bag at him, his options are take our deal, sign a two year MLE offer sheet that we would match or play on the qualifying offer and become unrestricted next summer.

If he takes the QO, what does that mean for remaining money to sign another vet PF?
I don't see that many teams that would really go after Grimes. Maybe Bucks? Would love to get Portis.

No clue, just vibes. A NAW-style contract should be fairly straightforward so any extended delay could be driven by negotiations with another team on a S&T.
I agree with Wilfried that the Bucks could be a team interested in him. If I were them, I’d be looking to convert Portis or Kuzma into a quality guard.

Bucks don’t have to the money to make an offer we wouldn’t match. NTMlE is only 14 a year. Grimes playing on the qualifying offer doesn’t really change anything for us. We would be slight under the 1st apron but could still only use the 5.8 mil MLE same as if we were to pay him 16 mil a year. They would probably need to salary dump Drummond to use the MLE since they would be hard capped at the 2nd apron however/

Bobby Portis just agreed to a new contract since he was a free agent too. Any team acquiring a player via sign and trade would be hard capped at the first apron so we couldn’t do it. Bringing back 22 mil 30 yr old Kyle Kuzma would put us in the 2nd apron and he sucks.

If there's a sign and trade with Grimes, can another player be added or can we just trade Grimes? I forget what the rules are for this.

Re: 2025 Offseason Free Agency Thread
If the long-term plan is to target a PF via Grimes as a trade chip, it will be easier to sign him now and trade him later. If he gets around $16m in year one, then we could target a guy like Jabari Smith by trading Grimes + Drummond in a few months.
Grimes is from Houston and would be a great fit there as a big guard next to FVV. For us, Smith is about as good as it could get in terms of targeting a very young guy who still has major upside, on a decent contract.

That is a full 14-man roster since we typically don't have 15 until late in the season.
Still hoping we can dump Drummond but not optimistic. Although if we do it's probably just to open a spot for Lowry lol.
Solid roster.

Looks like this will ultimately be the roster. We had Caleb Martin slotted to start at PF last season so I’d assume Kelly Oubre would technically be called PF and we would play Watford when we come up against bigger PFs. A solid lineup. I’m personally done with the Council project tho. Rather have another young project to groom.
