This will end badly.

As does everything Dolan touches. He's basketball poison.

This is what happens when the owner fires the head coach without having a plan in place to hire somebody clearly better.

I honestly reckon they thought they had someone already in mind/agreed to coach them (most likely Jason Kidd) before that person changed their mind after they fired Kidd.

This whole coaching search is probably evidence that they didn't have a plan B/backup plan.

I don't like Brown. The guy was small market Darvin Ham so he didn't get the attention. I do expect year 1 to be good, but he wears out his welcome extremely fast.

This was a guy who spent 2 years playing Alex Len. Refused to give Keon Ellis minutes over Colby Jones. Refused to cut down Huerters minutes even though dude was in a 2 year drought. He decided in game 7 vs the Warriors having Terence Davis guard Curry for 26 minutes was a better idea than giving Davion minutes. Just not good at all.

The plus side is he will go 10-11 deep, so hopefully the Knicks will be fresh by time they get to the post-season.

You'd assume that--and in a normal organization this would be the default, correct assumption--but Dolan doesn't work that way. He thrives on chaos, and reacts emotionally first without considering consequences. And then, he expects his staff to "fix" the resulting problems (while he goes out to play in his boy band).

I truly believe that Leon, if Dolan were not involved, would have reached out to the top candidates first, confirmed that at least one was available, and then (and only then) grudgingly fired Thibs. That's called planning ahead, and Leon seems good at this.

Instead, what we're seeing is a "reaction"--i.e., the Knicks scrambling after the fact to see if anybody, anywhere was willing and able to interview. That is not having a plan.

I wanted Johnnie Bryant (somebody completely new), or Udoka, or Wright. We first reached out to these three after firing Thibs, and were rejected by all three publicly. We also reached out to Kidd and Rivers--embarrassing in itself (as they both suck) --but were rejected by them too. :banghead: Having a plan in place would have meant that we'd contacted all these people before firing Thibs to see if any were available. We didn't do that, hence my writing the following in another thread:

better off keeping the known team capper over a dude whose won a chip?

Yeah, I don’t get it. Thibs can only get you so far. His offensive system (ie. pound the air out of the ball) doesn’t work at the highest levels. Brown will be an offensive upgrade and can likely maintain close to their current defensive performance.

This will be an upgrade for the Knicks given what their flaws are.

It would've been more cool if they hired an AI coach, but I wish them happy times with Coach Brown.

Under the circumstances, this is not a bad hire. For all the seemingly small complaints about him, he has a good winning percentage. He took a team with LeBron plus bunch of has beens to finals. He had good runs with Lakers first year and Sacramento as well. Coaches are scapegoated all the time for front office failures. The fact of the matter is none of the teams got better after he left showing he was not the reason of failures.

My take on Mike Brown is that he nails interviews and comes off as extremely likable. Outside of that, he’s mid at best when it comes to coaching and he wears out his welcome after a couple years. Seems like a great guy though. Malone was mad as hell the way the Kings fired him.
