Drafting No. 2 in those drafts hasn't been a problem as making overall bad selections in the lottery. In 2012, Charlotte had one of the worst seasons in NBA history (7-59, averaged 87 points per game while shooting a collective .414 field goal percentage) and used the No. 2 pick on a defensive-oriented player whose comparison was Tony Allen (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist) instead of selecting Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard (I preferred Beal).
There has been a parade of other notable misses:
2005 - Raymond Felton at No. 5 and Sean May at No. 13
2006 - Adam Morrison at No. 3
2008 - D.J. Augustin at No. 9
2011 - Bismack Biyombo at No. 7
2013 - Cody Zeller at No. 4
2014 - Noah Vonleh at No. 9
2015 - Frank Kaminsky at No. 9
2018 - Malik Monk at No. 11
2021 - James Bouknight at No. 11 and Kai Jones at No. 19
From an evaluation standpoint, Charlotte has hit only on Kemba Walker (No. 9, 2011) since getting the second franchise in Charlotte. LaMelo Ball (No. 3, 2020) and Brandon Miller (No. 2, 2023) were sort of no-brainers, being the second-best prospects in their classes. You also could include Miles Bridges (No. 12, 2018), but it is tempered by the fact that he was a draft-day swap for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (No. 11, 2018).
