Bobby has to go too, that Poeltl contract is just disgusting and we can't blame Masai for that. Hopefully Ed Rogers cleans house.

I'm not really worried if Juilius Randle and Naz Reid are their points of comparison

Every starter being paid a 20% premium. Change Bill's mind.

lol lol that guy is a hater, I stopped when he said 3 for 120 and giving up a 1st for Ingram is laughable, then compares Naz Reid 5-120 and Randle. Pelicans offered that same deal to Ingram and the Hawks would've as well.

Kind of see where he is coming from. With that being said I think the IQ contract is the main issue. RJs contract is not totally horrible and was inherited via trade. Barnes at the time I think he was trending to a max player. Jakob I think is even fine. IQ proves little to get paid this. 25 million a year was probably more inline and what market would have been.

Here are some notable PGs near quickley's salary range

30-40m
-Derrick White
-Fred Van Vleet
-Tyler Herro
-Jrue Holiday
-Jalen Brunson
-Jalen Suggs
-Lamelo
-Tyrese Maxey
-Darius Garland
-Ja Morant

I dunno - his production shows he isn't exactly an overpay like an OG Anunoby is.

The real danger is really on Barnes, Ingram and Quickley, if they are failures next season we will have 3 toxic contracts we won't be able to get rid of.

Barrett has gotten unnecessary hate from this board for reasons I will never understand.

I just watched a clip recently of Simmons criticizing the KG/Pierce trade to the Nets.

It turned out to be one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history. The fact he thought it was bad at the time is insane.

Simmons can be entertaining and that’s what he’s there for. What he’s not, is a guy that can objectively analyze the game of basketball. And that’s okay.

It's still too early to come to any sort of conclusions regarding guys like Ingram and Quickley and if they're overpaid or not. If they underperform next season or spend most if it riding the bench while injured, then we can have that discussion. I think they're dead wrong about Poeltl's extension though, he is definitely worth that money.

Mehh, we don't really know that for sure and whether that was all guaranteed money. Somehow I doubt Ingram turned down a 4-yr extension with more guaranteed $ while injured only to sign for 3 years just days later. I know there are some posters that keep insisting the FO signs good deals, but the fact is that they rarely get bargains. Best case scenario, it's market value and usually a premium on top.

When you hand out lots of money to retain guys while being a bad team, that's going to invite criticism. And it's probably justified. At this point, I think it's just their MO that they don't think those few extra dollars are worth anything (even though they've had to make some sub-optimal trades to shed salary). I suppose you could say they played hardball with Siakam and FVV by not giving them max dollars/extensions.

The only way we forego that premium and retain any of our above-average players is to become contenders. That is the only case where we avoid this.

Don’t blame the FO, blame taxes and blame the perceived Canadian disadvantage to American players especially

Probably because if you actually look at how contracts have aged they have constantly had one of the leagues cleanest cap sheets for over a decade.

Like seriously - go actually make a list of bad contracts we have in the past 10 years.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

IQ is the main contract that is currently an overpay until he proves himself.....the other guys I would consider their contracts to be fair/market value.

RJ is still on his old contract, not an overpay at all....his next contract is the problem
Barnes is perfectly fine on a max contract, just like all the other top guys in his draft class
Ingram is on a fair contract, only becomes a problem if he's injured
Poeltl is on a market value contract....everyone was expecting around 25 AAV.

You can argue about the fit but the contracts aren't the problem, especially for Toronto that is unable to sign any big name free agents...they have to retain their talent and it's usually at a slight premium.

Have they kept under the tax? Yes.
Have they signed bargain deals? OG, that's probably it.
Have they signed terrible deals? I'd say not since DMC.

Overpaid: KO, BI, IQ, Boucher, GTJ, Birch. If Poeltl's last year was fully guaranteed, I'd put him here but it seems like only $5M. Given his age and being 1 year away from UFA, it's still top-dollar but I won't quite call it overpaid. Unrelated, they don't seem to like forcing the hand of RFAs. I can only guess their reasoning is that if they saved an extra $5M here, it wouldn't be enough to get a difference maker anyway. I tend to think you could add up minor savings here and there, combine it with Garrett Temple money and get a serviceable bench player, but they seem to have a different philosophy.

If we had that extra 7 million (IQs contract drops to 25 million) we don't have the roster space to add anyone and no one is out there who would earn playing time over what we have. Plus we want to see our youth develop and they need playing time so we can make judgements.

There isn't a better backup center just waiting. SG/SF/PF are jammed already and PG looks three deep already.
