Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
So Detroit could involve a 3rd team and take back a 22.6M player?

Rather get the large TPE. Or rights to Raynaud and TPE
Someone with more knowledge than me can chime in, but I don't think we can sign and trade Schroeder to the Kings for a large exception because the Kings don't have the cap space? They currently are over the cap and presumably using the MLE to sign Schroeder.
However, I'm not sure if something like the following is a loophole or if the NBA has a rule against it:
Monk to Pistons for a 2nd round pick. Pistons have cap space (would hold off on signing Reed, Schroeder, and Levert) and can take on the contract. This creates a $18M trade exception for the Kings.
In a SEPARATE deal, Pistons sign and trade Schroeder to the Kings for a different 2nd round pick, creating a $15M trade exception for the Pistons. Kings now have the cap space to take on Schroeder not using MLE money since they have dumped Malik Monk (and possibly another contract).
Like surely there must be a rule against doing something like that, no?

Yes
Most likely involve multiple teams and multiple players moved so I seriously doubt Pistons would get the whole 22.6mil but I bet somewhere in the $8-15 mil range.

I don’t see Trajan rocking the boat and doing anything major here. Most likely is we attach one or two 2nds with Schroeder and get a TPE. Second most likely is Trey Lyles signs with the Kings and comes back this way and our roster is set.

Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
Currently the Pistons will have 13 players under contract for 25-26 season for a total of about $162 million. The luxury tax (which we certainly won't be paying this year but maybe in a year or two if we win some playoff series) for 25-26 is set at $187.9 million.... most of the last half decade we have never gotten anywhere close to the luxury tax we've always been real close to just hitting the salary cap ($154.7 million this season) each year.

I'd rather keep Duren than Ivey.

Utah doesn’t have to take back Monk. They might not want him. They might rather have a massive trade exception.

Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
Somewhere there’s a bizarro world where the team has a little more lotto luck the last couple of years and there’s actually a free agent worth signing in a year not many teams have cap space and the Pistons are the East version of the Thunder.
But not this world.
But not this world.

So it sounds like Detroit would take Monk back for nothing. Interesting for sure if true.

Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
So we lose Schroeder, THJ, Beasley and add Levert, Robinson & Monk? There's gotta be a bigger move no?

I don't think so I think they'd play Duncan Robinson as a backup four. Could be rough for Ron Holland if Sasser beats him out for that 10th spot but ideally you let whoever wins that spot take it. Ivey, LeVert, Monk can all handle the ball a bit in the 2nd unit.
C: Duren(26) / Stew(22)
F: Tobias (27) / Robinson(21)
F: Ausar (26) / LeVert (22)
G: Ivey(27) / Monk (21)
G: Cade(33) / Holland (15) -> or Sasser (15)

Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
Screw that. Give us Kuminga. GSW can have Monk and picks.
I don't mind getting Monk and Robinson but man Levert in addition to them just feels like a log jam. Wish they just never signed Levert. Not sure if it's the right time to buy on Monk either, his three point game really fell off. Under 36% the past 3 years. For reference, Beef Stew shot 38% in 2023-2024 (lol) and Ivey shot 40% last year. Neither are really considered shooters.
Also, having 4 bench guys making $14M+ seems really, really dumb.

At 22 Kuminga still has pretty massive upside for sure. He fits in timeline wise perfect with the young core. I wonder how much $$$ Sacramento is offering him in FA. Feels like it can't really be more than about MLE $.

Re: Pistons related Free Agency Thread
This is bizarre if it’s Monk.
We can’t play all these guards.
That said, if we’re acquiring him to deal someone for a big (either Monk himself or Ivey, or (dammit no) Holland), I can see it.
More to come soon, I guess. I’m glad Langdon is working every angle here.

For those thinking Monk is an “asset” that can later be flipped- reporting has been that his market is nonexistent right now.
