Ump was bad but not the reason we lost that one.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I like the kid's confidence and swagger, but this humbling outing will pay dividends down the road.
And speaking of the mental aspect of pitching, I was listening to the Mets radio broadcast of the first game yesterday when their announcer mentioned that it was the anniversary of the greatest game ever pitched. On July 2, 1963, Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves and Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants both went the distance -- 16 innings -- in a 1-0 game won by a Willie Mays home run in the 16th. The Giants manager, Alvin Dark, tried to pull the 25-year-old Marichal a few times, but he refused to come out and reportedly said, "I am not going to come out of that game as long as that old man is still pitching."
Spahn threw 201 pitches. He was 41 at the time. After the game, his teammates gave him a standing ovation in the clubhouse.
I remember listening to this game in real time as a kid, and it still makes me a little misty to think about it. Spahn was my boyhood hero. I still have a ball he signed wishing me a happy birthday. He happened to be doing a ball signing at Gimbels to sell baseballs and it was my birthday. He couldn't have been nicer to us snot-nosed kids.
