Wolves/Griz very rough trade idea, probably needs serious help.
I am not even sure I would make this trade. But it was an interesting idea I thought I would share.
Knowing that Jaron Jackson Jr is out for at least three months of the regular season,
Wolves out: Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, Rob Dillingham, Terrance Shannon Jr.
Wolves in: Jaron Jackson Jr, and Ja Morant.
Why for Memphis, they already have two young promising players in Edie and Wells. Add Dilly and TSJ and that could be the foundation of a young core to build around. Randle and Gobert could keep them afloat this season or be moved to other teams for even more value (Memphis already traded Bane for a pick package and JJJ missing at least 3 months is a bad recipe for this season.) The Griz get a soft reboot without multiple years of fishing for picks.
Why for the Wolves: Ja Morant is paired with Ant and the Wolves finally have their superstar PG, (though I am worried he and Ant might be a bit to ball dependent and redundant to play together.) JJJ can play center when healthy, and now the Wolves have a starting 5 of JA/Ant/McDaniels/Naz/JJJ with Conley/DDV/Clark/Joan behind them. Add a center with the TPMLE to start until JJJ gets healthy and then allows Joan a year to develop, and the Wolves get better/younger without needing to wait for TSJ and Dilly to develop.
cannot check the trade machine, but Memphis would have Edie and Wells plus our two sophomores plus two win now players in Randle and Rudy to try and keep this season from busting. We could also rework it, keep Rudy, send out DDV, I would not include Ant, Jaden, or Naz. I would not send out more than 4 rotation players.
I cannot check the trade machine because it cannot include Randle. But I did some math on my own. Ja and JJJ cost $72,446,090. Rudy costs 38, Randle 31 and change (not announced yet,) Dilly $6,576,120, and TSJ $2,674,080. Wolves outgoing would be approximately (need more specific Randle numbers,) $78,250,200. Griz might need/want it to be a 3 team deal.
Summary: Wolves outgoing approximately $78,250,200, Wolves incoming approximately 72,446,090. JA makes more than Rudy so Wolves need to aggregate which hard caps them at the 2nd apron. Wolves need to backfill 2 roster spots as they go from 13 to 11. Wolves add almost 6 million to their available space. Probably sign a center with TPMLE and have that C start with JB backing him up till JJJ gets healthy.
Griz add almost 6 million unless they reroute Rudy and Randle. They get two young players to pair with Edie and Wells and they get resale value of Rudy and Randle to help with their plans short term and/or long term.
This deal probably needs a lot of work, again I am not sure I would do it. I just thought I would share the idea.

JJJ cant be traded for 6 months i believe after his extension.
Randle as a FA signing cant be traded until dec 15 or soemthing like that too i think?

Looks ok from the Memphis perspective if you add a majority stake in the Wolves franchise and all its future picks. Otherwise, looks good.

We think Randle can be. Depends on the numbers. If he is close enough at his new 31 million (within 5% of the old 31 million option,) then it works and he has no trade delay. As for JJJ I do not know. If we have to add a mid season delay, that might work.

Randle opted out of his final year and signed a new deal, he did not extend his deal.

To me this is really bad. And I’m typically one of the highest on Rudy’s value.
I think Randle will have value on his deal, but it’s not as much as Ja. And Rudy isn’t close to JJJ.
Minn only has one way (player) to make this deal work and that would be taking too far the other direction obviously

So you see no value in Shannon (played very well in spurts during the regular season, and very well in the playoffs,) and no value in Dillingham (#8 overall, who was always going to need time to get his body NBA ready.) This is I think where the disconnect is.

not enough value to make up the difference between Randle/gobert and JJJ/Ja. it's a big gulf

I don’t believe it’s salvageable.
The Grizzlies likely agreed to this extension knowing JJJ would be out for a while. They traded Bane to keep him and keep the rest of the core together in general.
It makes no sense for them to blow it up right after extending him.

I really don’t think Memphis trades either of their players for either vet from Minn with both those prospects. And then you are trying to convince them to do both.
I’m trying not sound like or give a hyperbolic response..

Grizz are not trading Ja or Jaren.
Regarding this deal Ja and Jaren are the best players with the most value. Minny can’t afford what it would take to get Jaren let alone Ja as well lol.

Yeah this deal isn't really workable at all for Memphis side of things.QMemphis wrote:Grizz are not trading Ja or Jaren.

But just generally there is a difference between cant afford and won't pay. They certainly have a player that would get JJJ. But they won't pay it.

Re: Wolves/Griz very rough trade idea, probably needs serious help.
I think MEM needs to keep JJJ to give casual fans a reason to stick with the team. He’s more valuable to MEM than MIN.
I think MEM has been secretly fielding Ja offers for a year, and aren’t getting offers that are better than simply keeping him and rolling the dice on their 25 year old. He’s more valuable to MEM than MIN too.
I would also argue Gobert is more valuable to MIN than MEM too, specifically since the Gobert-Naz tandem was the best two-man line up the Wolves had last year. With two players’ skill sets that need each other, Rudy is more valuable to MIN than MEM.
When I see trades where players are moving from better fits to worse, I visualize trying to row a canoe upstream. It can be done, but it takes a lot of effort (or value, like Dillingham and TSJ), but generally it’s better to look elsewhere.

Offer is missing at least eight unprotected 1st round picks going to Memphis.

Yeah, this isn't salvageable. It's much closer with Ant subbed in, in place Randle, Dillingham, and Shannon. That's how far off it is.

Yeah, this definitely isn’t remotely salvageable, even if Minnesota had all of their picks.
