I’m surprised GS wouldn’t want Monk as at least a consolation prize in the Kuminga experience. He could be a nice backup guard with true explosive scoring potential like Poole was, that could conserve Curry to the end, add Saric as the stretch 5 they want and some 2nd rd picks and that might be the push they need with Butler there.

Monk is expensive for that role. GS adding Horford, do they still need/want Saric?

They had Saric two seasons ago. He sucks. When he's not in street clothes, he provides bad value. They've already got Post as a high-percentage shooter at center. 2nds will do them no good in the now, and the now is all they care about.

Maybe they'd find some value in Monk, but they've already got Podz, Hield, and Moody chowing on guard minutes, and Kerr isn't a huge fan of bench flamethrowers anyway.

Monk does apply rim pressure, too. He’s not just a shooter.

The issue in Detroit isn’t that Monk sucks, although he did play worse last year in a bigger role. The issue is redundancy (very similar to Ivey) and contract.

Period, redundancy. People need to get past the notion you can have 10 guys capable of playing 36 minutes and split them 24 minutes each not only would they be happy but they'd actually be effective in the role. The amount of overlap and diminishing returns Monk would bring for $20 million would be more of a detriment than it would help.

Wow, that’s creative!

Thanks for sharing.

At that price, there’s really no risk.

I don't think Utah is looking to give Collins away for free. A protected FRP in the least would have to go back and I think the Pistons are better off keeping their ability to offer 3-4 FRP's and swaps to get Cade his 1B.

They paid only a 2nd round pick to get him from Atlanta two years ago. They'd probably be happy to get two 2nds out of him now, assuming they would rather have that cap space to go after another player. I think he would make more sense to keep if they would have found someone to buy high on Lauri Markkanen but those guys are essentially the same player... both perimeter bigs who can shoot and don't defend much. They are both 28 years old and they both played less than 50 games last season.

The fact they bought out Clarkston and moved on from Sexton.... and also the fact they are rumored to be wanting to move Collins but his market is just soft right now makes me think they'd likely move him for very minimal draft compensation if they can't find anything else. I think Ainge also knows the value of a large TPE down the road when a team gets deperate to move off some salary.

By all accounts, his value is very low. He's an injury-prone player on an expiring contract who lacks any substantive track record of success. Atlanta dumped him to the Jazz, and he's been nothing special there.

Neither the Pistons nor anyone else will give away a protected 1st of any value for Collins. He's just not that good.

Collins is overpaid for what he is. I think everyone agrees with that. But would he be a great BACKUP PF behind Tobias? Sure.

I’m not a cap expert, but I think getting matching salaries is a problem. Thx to my friend ChatGTP, here is what I think applies:

Salary range: $7.5M to $29M
+125% of outgoing salary + $100K

$26.58M -100K = $26.48M / 1.25 = $21.184M

So unless we include the Nets in a 3 way deal (which might be the way to go), we have to come up with a little over $21M to get Collins. That’s one issue.

Secondly, he is an expiring deal. So whatever we’re giving up could be for a one year rental.

So whatever we’re giving matching salaries and minimal draft assets do we want to use in a trade?

Best I can think of is a 3 way w the Nets, giving them Sassar ($2.8M) + SRP for around $18M in cap space, and then another SRP to Utah for Collins. I guess Sassar and the picks could be shuffled around if Utah would do it for just Sassar and then two SRPs to the Nets.

Sounds like Collins' three point shooting has recovered (it went way down with his hand injury), so that's good to see at least.

Am I the only one that sees Collins as an UPGRADE over Tobias?

I’d love to somehow get him for Monk and a 2nd

Or TPE and a couple 2nds (we have extra)

Cade / LaVert / Sasser
Ivey / Robinson / Lanier
Ausar / Holland / Brice Williams?
Collins / Tobias / Klintman
Duren / Stewart / Reed

Collins is absolutely not an upgrade on Tobias.

I know Tobias gets a lot of flack around here for bring in his 30’s, not being flashy, and often avoiding contact aka playing soft, but he literally does EVERYTHING at a solid and sometimes better level. No exploitable weaknesses, not a ball stopper, can finish, shoot, post, pass, and defend.

Someone like Collins replacing his minutes will hurt Detroit. Yeah, Collins is capable of shooting a higher percentage from three and has flashier dunks and blocks because he’s a better athlete, but he also makes tons of mistakes Tobias won’t make. He’s an inferior man defender that can be bullied, he isn’t a good passer, and he’s definitely fragile.

Collins had a good half season last year, no doubt. But be careful what you wish for.

I think Collin’s is flashier and numbers look better than he is, Tobias is the opposite unflashy and provides more than the numbers show.

By all accounts, the Pistons will at the very least be making the Schroder deal a sign-and-trade. In that event, a three-team deal with Sacramento and Utah would allow them to take in Collins while sending out no additional salary but that of Sasser or a signed-and-traded Waters.

That said: I know I harp on this, but the backup power forward minutes are sort of already spoken for, and Collins -- who is accustomed to playing ~30 MPG, cannot play down the lineup (not that the minutes are there either) and is not exactly known for his even temperament in the locker room -- would presumably be less than thrilled at playing 10-15 MPG in a healthy rotation.

I still find the trade exception preferable to anything we've been rumored to get for Dennis.

These are players we've been repeatedly told there's no trade market for. I'd say Collins is preferable because he, at least, is expiring.
