I want to take a moment to point out to fellow Blazers fans how idiotically stupid all of these moves have been this offseason. Step out of the slow boiling pot for a second and look at our moves in their entirety. No direction, no sense, just gifts to the league.

I disagree.

Neither Simons nor Ayton has a future here and they were both sent packing. You may not like the return (many don’t) but are no longer sucking up minutes that should be going to players that might have a future here.

Then why bring Ayton in to begin with?! What was the plan there?

It's really easy. Cronin made a mistake.

It's a common problem with an under performing professional athlete. Can they unlock their full potential on another team in a different system. There is precedent for a high draft pick whus a bad fit in the wrong system to turn it around.

But, at the end of the day, Ayton did not do that in Portland.

Not every gamble pays off every time.

Recent #1 pick, thought a change of scenery might allow him to be the best version of himself.

"Every obviously bad move is perfectly explainable in hindsight." You sound like a true Blazers fan. It's always a good move when we acquire players and always a good move when we discard them for pennies. Always a good move when we keep players too long but also a good move to send away assets for over-the-hill vets on bloated contracts. And on, and on. It's becoming really hard to be a fan of this franchise when I disagree with 90% of their decisions. it really started to go downhill cs Meyers Leonard, Allen Crabbe, and Evan Turner and it's never recovered since, we keep stacking up long-term bad money and never jump off the treadmill because this team isn't owned by anyone that actually cares about winning (and it shows).

I get it. This franchise has made so many disadvantages, that it's margin for error really cannot overcome mistakes.

Short version, it the franchise is causing you more frustration than you're willing to accept...quit being a fan of the Portland Trailblazers.

Blazers have made their share of mistakes and have also made good trades.

In the end, its only a game and there are far more frustrating things in the world than the Portland
Trail Blazers. Rather than focus on past mistakes and smart moves, focus on the moves in the future

Now that the Lakers are paying Ayton, what is the dead money cap hit for Ayton?

that isn't updated for Ayton's Laker contract

it might be:

8M/2 = 4M
4M - 1.2M (league minimum) = 2.8M

25.55M - 2.8M = 22.75M

I thought I’d seen this math discussed but could not remember where. I figured you (or a couple others) would have some numbers and/or equation. Thanks.

To be fair, I think the point is that Jrue will suck up exactly the same minutes that Simons had.

Sure, he won't suck up the volume of shots, and he'll obviously bring a more defense first mentality, but the minutes picture looks identical for the guards.

For the record, I'm happy with the Ayton gamble because frankly I don't think he has much value at all in trade discussions. Nurkic wasn't a piece for the future, and even if Ayton only had a 10% chance of being that, that was a swing I was happy enough that we took.

It's not as if Ayton was a genuinely core value piece of the Dame trade. That was Jrue and the Milwaukee pick/swaps.

I did not have a problem gambling on Ayton; it could have paid off.

Well-deserved.

Pollyanna seems…maybe not the most appropriate.

1. Ayton wanted a rookie’s max 2nd contract. Phoenix did not value him that much and did not want to be precluded from trading for a young star who had, or would get, the max on his 2nd contract. At that time, IIRC, league rules said a team could have 2 of those at the same time but not 3.
2. So they had the RFA Ayton seek offers, Indiana valued him, and they gave him the RFA max for a rookie. PHX matched. They valued his contract enough not to have it walk out the door whether eventually keeping him or trading him.
3. Ayton and Monty Williams did not get along. Or talk … eventually. Monty got a 2nd contract and was soon paid to go elsewhere, went to DET, and was soon paid even more to leave.

Nurk knew he was gone when Dame asked out.
Ayton was a hope that a new view would better work out. Teammates like him, apparently.
Ayton is now a Laker.
Nurk a Jazz.
Toumani, who was insisted upon, is a Trail Blazer. The Trail Blazers won.

Go Blazers!
