I agree about Silver's targeting of Eurobasket...I would add that the extended playoffs is incredibly intense play for way too many games. There's no good reason for 7-game series from the first round on...obviously, there's a lot of money to be made with added sellouts and TV time, but that's a LOT of games at that level of intensity vs other playoff-caliber teams. I also miss the potential for upsets with the shorter initial series...it's why the NCAA tourney is the most thrilling thing to follow. "Win or go home" is way too extreme for the NBA, where an 82 game war SHOULD guarantee you serious seeding and home court advantage, but winning 4 is excessive in the first round (maybe even second).

Yeah... but no. A 7 game series shows who the better team is. I mean NCAA shows a 16seed who just happens to get hot for 3 games beat #1 seeds who had bad days when they met. As exciting as it is fpr casuals, i kinda feel for the #1 team who probably had 3 senior starters , hustled and sacrificed, just to et bounced because ot was one of those days that the rim seemed to be nailed shot even on layups

Any non-casual can understand that a best of 5 series is nothing like "win or go home".

The whole idea of playoffs is excitement for fans to pay for - lengthening it to make sure "the best teams wins" is basically just working harder to eliminate upsets (although the reason is obviously revenue) ...a 5 game series is a nice balance of a "better team" maybe being outcoached, showing up overly confident, or otherwise running into a bad matchup. Might as well just give the regular season champ the trophy if that's the goal. If the bigger picture is cutting somewhere to avoid injuries, cutting playoff games makes more sense (from a physical sense) because the intensity is WAY up and there's no resting of players or deeper rotations for most playoff teams - Haliburton heroically put himself in harm's way with a lingering injury for the most glaring example - heroic decision by a star, tragic blow to IND's entire next season and possibly beyond.

But it makes sense no? Imagine a team like us.. we pay and go into luxury tax category to assemble the best squad possible to win the chip. Then we have say X team who has a cheap owner and just wants to go to the PO every season to get more profit. Yet when we (1) face them (8), they have a player who in a normal game has a 35% 3pt shooting average yet like the NCAA, have a 3 game stretch where he averages 55%.

Kinda sucks for the better team. Yet sure for casuals its a great story. Also the cheap owner thinks he can just run it back next season cuz he gets more profit without spending more?

The NBA isn't going to lower the number of games they play, so players can play in the summer.

I don't think Jakucionis could get the ball over half court with Suggs guarding him.

Yeah agree. Its like you are asking the NBA to subsidize other basketball leagues...

Jameer was the first player I thought of when we drafted Jase but Jameer is built like a tank and quick as hell from what I remember.

Quick against players in the early 2000s. This era? Not sure he can do that anymore...

He looked good, no doubt… but it took him 27 shots to get to 28 points. Still, I like the pick for Philly. Ace doesn’t seem all there if you know what I mean…

Streaming services have made it so that "Must see TV" does not exist for comedies or drama. On demand won.
The only thing that networks have for a schedule are politics/news, and sports. As the first is a bit random and cannot fill out a week of TV time.
So we are left with sports.

The major networks are overpaying for TV rights because in a dying market, this is all that is left.

So: for me the problem is not that there is an 82 game season, or 162 MLB games, or 82 NHL games, or an inundation of NCAA options, instead, the problem is that streaming services will eventually buy all this as well and then it will be Amazon/Google/Netflix/Disney/Paramount that determines the number of NBA games in a regular and postseason. Not fans or players, but owners and their profit maximisation.

The current CBA lasts until at least 2029–30.

The 2029–30 NBA financial thresholds, per RealGM’s salary cap tracker:

Salary Cap: $191,009,000
Luxury Tax Line: $232,076,000
First Apron: $241,979,000
Second Apron: $256,651,000

Reasonably assuming all mediocre + teams see the lux tax line as the actual cap, this means that the average NBA salary will be 16.7M a year. At least 2/3rds of the league will be making more than 10M a year. Two-way players will make 1.5M a year. And there will be a supermax player making more than 100M a year.

My point: as long as money flows into the league at these levels, there will be a 82 game NBA season. And "stars" will play between 60-70 games a season in that. Stars is in quotes as this seems like the top 100 players at this point get that label. (All of whom will all be making more than 20M a year).

I just watch how fuid players are at SL.
Edgecombe looks smooth and plays like he is much taller probably because he is so damn athletic and shifty.

Ace is amazing athlete but not sure head is in right place.

Just realised that Wendell Moore Jr. is on the Summer team. He has to be close to being a deep-bench NBA player. Right?

Could he be Mr #14. He is certianly an upgrade over Houstan, who's slot this is.

Edgecombe looked as fast as Westbrook but actually has skill. Philadelphia may have another star. Maxey, McCain, Edgecombe, and Grimes are going to be tough.

Clayton looked good. He was backing up Collier, so he didn't get a lot of opportunities.

Tbh Wes had skill but was in attack mode all the time.

I probably should've said a better shooter, not skill level.

If Philadelphia gets anything from Embiid, they would probably be the favorite in the East. Edgecombe looks like a star, and so are McCain and Maxey. Edgecombe looks like he's better suited to play PG.

Youtube doctors aren't optimistic about Embiid. But who knows.

On paper Maxey- Edge-Grimes-George- Embiid + McCain, Drummond, Gordon and Oubre sounds great.

I’m not sure why you keep calling it Mr. 14 when they already have 14, it would be Mr. 15, no?

First thing I noticed as well, he’s definitely going to struggle in the NBA.

Return to Orlando Magic
