I would love to hire Thibs as an assistant.

Do MIN have right guys to make play from mid range?

Jaden is deadly from the midrange.

I would say lets see what he does with more volume and against teams when they actually gameplan for him. I would love for it to become true but taking a wait and see approach.

I think Thibs has run his course...at least here. I don't really want to see our team bring back anyone with the old wolves stink on them.

We broke through to the playoffs with him after missing them for 100 years. Not so much stink.

Why? The Knicks haven't had a defense inside the Top 10 since Thibs' first year.

Interesting. I was just basing it on his defensive rep.

I'm sure he'd be fine in the role. Just not needed. And potentially a distraction.

Gawd No! Thibs has major stank on him and his scowl and barking are not something I want to see.

Lets not forget how bad his defenses were with the Wolves, especially pre-Jimmy. Thibs thinks barking and saying ICE, ICE is all you need to do and he hasn't adapted.

Def some stink on him. The whole Jimmy fiasco was under his watch. Although they made the playoffs it was a non enjoyable season.

I don’t hate the guy just don’t care to see him back.

I hate Jimmy. I was his biggest supporter and then he turns into a big flaming pile of dung after we don't cut half our team just to give him a bigger contract. Thibs had his problems and I think he will be better as an assistant coach.

With NAW gone, here are components that our bench unit can bake in to create a competent offense:

Jaylen Clark:

on-ball and off-ball defense that leads to transition buckets

and a lot of threes

Naz Reid

positional versatility: can punish smaller opponents in the post, slash against slower opponents, and hit threes

To sum up: I’m very intrigued by the potential of this group. They look destined to play fast-paced, aggressive basketball.

The most glaring weakness is still there: we lack a quality backup C and PG. I like Beringer and Zikarsky as prospects, but someone like Valanciunas or Gafford will eat them alive. Same with DDV/Conley/Rob at PG.

However, there are a few ways to minimize these issues:

First, Gobert, Beringer, and Zikarsky are legit seven-footers with functional athleticism. All three have elite measurements and can run and jump. The hope is that what they lack in skill they can compensate for with physical tools.

Second, if Beringer/Zikarsky can process the game at NBA speed, they are much better rotation additions than Garza or Minott. Garza is a high-character, high-IQ player but has limited athleticism. Minott was often a step slow in team offense and defense.

If Gobert takes the full summer to recover, he can handle the heaviest minutes at C (say, ~30 MPG). Then I’m fine giving Naz ~10 minutes at C and ~8 minutes to Beringer/Zikarsky.

Second, regarding playmaking: I feel like all of these guys — Reid, DDV, Rob, Clark, TJ — are willing passers who enjoy playing together:

Note: They’re not high-level passers, but the goal is to make the right reads that lead to simple, easy passes — kick-outs to open 3s, dump-offs, skip passes, hitting cutters, etc.

Then incorporate high-paced offense that actively creates and uses spacing:

P.S. I’ve seen a few highlights of Beringer and Zikarsky where both showed potential to be at least average-passing bigs. Not too mentioned that either Joan and Rocco can be a big improvement over Garza in terms of rim protection and rebounding.

I am re-watching MIN games, highlights and videos. During one game this season I heard Michael Grady saying that Naz had second best in NBA FG% on hook shots. I did not find any confirmation, but last season he was third on hook shots.

Read on Twitter

That makes me wonder why people are often confused with Naz skillset, saying that his primary weapon are threes. Hence, they call him a stretch 5/4. But in reality he is a really mismatch creator: he can punish smaller opponents in the post, he can beat slower bigs off the dribble and he can shoot threes, even pull up threes. It means that Naz is essential piece of this roster, because he connects non shooting Gobert, inconsistent shooters like McDaniels, Randle AND smallball units where he can act like a bigman in the post. Beringer has skillset of rim-runner, but Naz fits well next to such athletic and mobile rim-runner.

What a pathetic attempt to justify the "wild overpayment" of Naz Reed, he turns out to be a better player than Garford, the most he could expect was to be paid the same as his successor, Kelley OlyniK

Naz's contract is far from a wild overpay. At worst it's a mild overpay.
