They couldn't even do that deal after already having paid Levert. This only happened this way because of the sign and trade. Some creative people got into a room and worked out a win-win-win situation for 3 different parties.

Just to be clear, there is no option of, "get buyout from Miami and also get $15 million this year from Detroit". Also, you're kinda hung up on when he'd be receiving his 2nd year buyout if Detroit waives him after this year. I'm only looking at he'd get his $15 mil + his buyout (speculating $5 million) after one season of basketball, the same as he would've on an opted in Miami contract.

I mean, unless you're worried he's going to die in like next May and wouldn't ever see the Detroit buyout money so it would be better to opt in and get the $20 million from October-April.

They could have signed Robinson using the MLE. Hence received Levert into he sign and trade outgoing to Sacramento. Maybe it costs Detroit an extra 2nd to grease the wheels, but it’s certainly possible.

But in general, money now is worth more than money later. It’s usually a big value. Robinson could always find more money inna future year, but he can’t go back in time and add money in a previous season.
Aiight bruh, so about that "dap and move on"........you were saying?

Oh, you wanted to get the last word in and then ask for it to be done?

If you’re done, I’m done.

At some point it’s about being “right” and not about basketball. It’s not so entertaining for everyone else.

It wasn't about getting the last word, I literally was just pointing out where we differed in our line of thinking FFS. But go off fam.

I'm sorry, were we discussing tennis? Because I'm pretty sure we were still discussing BASKETBALL free agency and contracts.

Well, it looks like he did indeed give up some money. Only 18.8 mil guaranteed, so unless you think he couldn’t get 8.8 mil this year as a free agent (when Kennard got 11m), he gave up at least a little.

Kinda makes me feel good. Hopefully that means he’s excited to come back to the Great Lake State, and he thinks he can convince Detroit to keep him around next year with his play. There are certainly shots to be had — Malik Beasley’s foolishness has left a gaping hole in our offense from last year. Ivey will get a lot of it, and so will Caris, but we’re replacing Beas, Schroder and Fontecchio in the rotation.

Doubt he was getting guaranteed on the Heat...
I don't hate this for the Pistons, but they should have aimed higher in such weak east.

He had 10 mil guaranteed from the Heat, thus my math.

Forgot to write the remainder of the sentence :) I don't think he gets 8.8 on the open market, he's a TPMLE/BAE kinda guy, ~12/2, so he was looking at 16M this year if he was bought out.

Good deal for the Pistons. Even if it’s an overpay for this year, those last two look ripe for renegotiation.

I think most people are seeing this the wrong way. Detroit dumped $ 8,307,692 in unwanted money and signed Ronbinson for $ 16,834,692. Detroit is really just paying 8,500,00 for Robinson's first year. Fontecchio was out of the rotation and Detroit was trying to dump his salary.

Next year Robinson have only 2 million guaranteed. So yes, Detroit did really well here imo. There is absolutely nothing bad about Robinson's contract.

Should Detroit have aimed righer and acquired a better player than Duncan Robinson? That's another discussion, and that may be a valid point, but Robinson's contract is very good imo. If he plays out of his mind, he is on a declining contract. If he is unplayable because of his defense, we're only paying an extra 8,5 million and he is a tradeable contract. No downsize at all.

Fontecchio is a very likeable guy, so hopefully he will be fully healed from his surgery, his shot will start to fall again, and he will be a better fit in Miami. He always played hard so I got nothing but love and respect for him, he was just a terrible fit in JB's system and he really had to go.

Totally agree. Detroit dumps its worst salary and gets one of the better 3 point shooters in the league.

I have to think Fontecchio was not 100% last year. Such a drop off from his 23-24 season ending stretch.

Pistons got dragged for this contract when it was announced but of the 48 million, less than 19 is guaranteed. Robinson will provide valuable floor spacing off the bench given Beasley's absence, and I could see the contract being a valuable trade chip if the Pistons were going star hunting and needed salary to match. We also got off Fontecchio who was a net negative last year and was rightfully benched in the playoffs.
