I think it would just be using his bird rights.

That's correct. I wasn't sure if they were going to have to renounce Moe's bird rights to make the Tyus signing, but they did not.

The Magic still have $7.1M left of their full $14.1M MLE with $7M going to Tyus Jones.

They are, however, only $1.24M under the hard cap. So in order to use that $7.1M, they would have to unload approximately $5.86M in a trade.

$1.24M is less than the minimum. Are we just going to go with 14? Or use 2 ways

Also, assuming no other moves this offseason, and some guys around the league are waived at the trade deadline, are we able to get in on that, or would we still need to trade since we are hardcapped?

Right now they can't sign anybody else to a standard NBA deal unless they make a move to create more space.

Punting Jett's $5.5M into someone's TPE/cap space would allow the Magic to sign two veteran minimums if they were so inclined.

That's why I think the $2M above the minimum that Moritz got was so loud. To me it clearly signals that salary will be dumped elsewhere.

They're at 14 right now, so they're roster compliant. And they have until the trade deadline/end of the season to duck the luxury tax.

So they don't *have* to do anything. But punting Jett and filling spots 14 and 15 with two veteran minimum does make some sense to me. Especially considering the odds are overwhelmingly likely they are declining Jett's option for his 4th season anyway.

I am not sure there are many teams with the space to take on salary and the roster spots. And that space has to be extremely valuable at this point, i can't imagine the Magic are the only ones looking to stay under a number. Suppose we could waive and stretch, but that is just going to punt the pain down the road a bit.

Crazy that after Year 2 the only talk surrounding Jett is how can they dump his salary. That pick made zero sense at the time and even less now. It really seems like Mosley decided early on that no matter how desperate they were for shooting this guy is not an NBA player. It's got to be more than his defense, but we may never know.

Hopefully there is a 3rd year jump?
