Norm probably wanted more money over a longer contract than what we wanted to give without losing cap flexibility going forward.

I’m guessing we’re about to land Beal too.

Kinda saw this coming. This is a calculated risk move that is likely to work out. Collins fits our positional need perfectly. He’s also, probably, overpaid this year. But he’s also expiring, and that means if he works out and has a great year, we can resign him to a long term deal that will take him and us through his peak years. If he’s just okay, we can probably sign him for less. And he’s a total bust with us, we get the cap space next year. There’s some risk, but enough chance for the upside to pan out for me to like the move.

It also makes us a guard short and, imo, puts us in the driver’s seat in the Bradley Beal buyout sweepstakes.

Lawrence Frank, what's your burner on here? It's cool if u want to stay discreet, just give this post a thumbs down or something. Jk.
Honestly, I really like Norm. He was basically an all star last year, and had some really cool moments. So I was really hoping they could keep him. However, I've been in favor of getting Collins for awhile.
I guess Chris Paul or Brad Beal to finish off the off season. The problem is both would probably want to start. Defensively how good is a cp3, James harden, kawhi trio. Like who guards Shai or Anthony Edwards or Steph

How long have we called this lol?

I like it. Fits a need and an expiring.

Another signing to replace Powell’s scoring is next.

I think this puts (a lot) more pressure on us to get a combo guard for the scoring, like KL2 said. Fortunately, there are some good options out there. That being said, I don’t think there’s a chance the Wizards give up Champagnie. He’s on an incredibly good contract the Wiz just signed him to; he’s getting paid less than a pick in the low 20s, and he’s way more productive than most players are from that draft point, and he’s doing it now, and he’s still barely 24. He’s both developmental and a high floor guy right now. I just don’t see them giving him up. Maybe another wing, but not him. My guess is the guys they’re shopping are Corey Kispert and AJ Johnson. I’d love to get Champagnie, though.

Would Beal help us? Sure. I think he’s a better player than he has been on the Suns in the last two years. That’s a badly constructed, mismanaged team. You never can get an accurate sense of a player’s value in a situation like that. I’d be in favor of him for the rest of the trade exception—about $6 million. It may be less, since John Collins makes more than Norm did. But it’s a consideration.

I’m again putting by two cents in for Jared Butler. He’s (also) a guy that was on not one, but two badly constructed, mismanaged teams. He has a health issue that’s under control, but could affect him at some point. He doesn’t have a huge wingspan or great height/athleticism. I realize those are (big) minuses. He’s also 24, has improved his efficiency and scoring every year in the league (so he’s still got some upside), works his a$$ off on both ends (i.e., solid on D), and doesn’t make mistakes with the ball. In the 40 games where he played over 10 minutes last year, he put up 12 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.4 boards in 23 mpg with .453/.370/.825 shooting splits. He would help us a lot as the #4 guard behind Bogie, Harden, and Dunn.

We didn't get absolutely fleeced for once, but I sure hope Collins is even half as good as seemingly half our fanbase has been preaching for like half a decade now.

Team is finally getting bigger. Zu, Lopez, Collins, and Yanic. I like it. Thank you Norm. I guess Beal is now on the radar.

We need more size, athleticism and youth, JC fits the bill. Hate to see Norm go, one of my fav player on the team, but it's better for the team.

It can easily be argued that Beal can provide at least 80% of what Norm Powell provided, so if Beal does come over, then losing Powell isnt a huge hit. I dont like having to pay Collins 26m vs Powell's 20mil, but at least it's an expiring and if Collins can hit 3s at a reasonable rate, he can play the 4 with Zubac, although his D Is pretty shoddy IIRC. It's kinda crazy how Collins efficiency wise has had great numbers in UTA but no one is really valuing him due to his contract size. Sucks to lose Norm, but its clear the team isnt gonna give him a big deal and that's easily understandable.

C - Zubac , BroLo , Yanic
PF - Collins , DJJ , Brown
SF - Kawhi , Batum
SG - Beal , Bogdan
PG - Harden , Dunn

Would like to mix in some young wings. Big man rotation looks solid though. If Beal can play like his old self, now that he's off a dysfunctional team, the Clips prolly have #3 seed potential.

A bet against 32 year old Norm's "jumper's knee"... logical

Double-big lineups seem like the trend... Collins a starter? (a la: Beard/Beal/Kawhi/Collins/Zu?)

It’s happening! I called it in the other thread. Now watch Beal and CP3 or Brogdon.

Im sure Kawhi is thrilled to not have to play PF anymore. When’s the last time we had a PF with John Collins’ size? Tobi? Blake? It’s about time. And believe it or not, John Collins is only 27 years old. A younger athletic big is welcomed!

Sucks to lose Norm, he was the heart and sole of last years team. One of my favorite seasons of all time. Hope he continues to thrive in Miami though, ill be rooting for him there.

They're both solid players, I think talent wise this is roughly a lateral move?

Norm wasn't the same after getting back from injury, coinciding with Kawhi's emergence which is probably not coincidental. John Collins for Norm is better for roster balance. Also, their age difference is not nothing, given our team age.

Norm really saved our season holding down the fort until Kawhi was finally ready. I'll always appreciate Mr. Addition by Subtraction, and hope he kills it in Miami.

This is like our moves last offseason, we are doing what we can within the given constraints and not adding additional salary for 2027-28. These constraints really narrows the window of moves we can make, FWIW in that context this is a very good move.

Yes my campaign for Champagnie is dead after this move. I would do Kispert+champagnie for bogdan+ 2 2nd rd picks. Get them off from kisperts extra salary for next 2 seasons might be enticing for our old geezer Winger. Nevermind its dead now.

Now it's better to look a kobe brown trade. No playing time for that 26 years old 3rd year pf behind Collins-batum-djjr.

This trade as of now creates more questions than the answers its provided for problems. If beal is coming though? I would say bring the fuçk on!

It's interesting. I sortve think they should either keep Dunn or DJJ starting at the 2 or bring back Russ. I just think you need that versatile defender that will match up with Luka, Shai, Steph. I don't think it can be Kawhi. Brogdon is interesting but it seems like he's not what he once was.

A trade that a lot of us have mentioned and said would make sense for this roster.

Similar level players, it's just about filling a better position need for the Clippers.

Good move.

As a Hawks fan, what I can tell you about John Collins...

He is a very productive role player who puts up big number in meaningless games against lesser competition and disappears in big games against star NBA players.

He will average 20ppg in the regular season but then only average 12ppg in the playoffs.

And he constantly has injury issues.

There a lots of 6'2" guards out there who can fill it up. I liked Norm but he was of zero help on D and with the ballhandling. Our draftee-but-never-a-Clipper Quentin Grimes is out there without a contract. Lit it up for the Sixers after everybody got injured. They're out there.

https://www.basketballnetwork.net/latest-news/patrick-beverley-reacts-to-quentin-grimes-asking-for-25-million-a-year

I mean, he's a 25-yr-old who's on his 4th team [NYK, DET, DAL, PHI]. Look how Brandon Boston did when cut loose with the Pels. He has no guaranteed contract either--they just declined his option. And Beal and CP3 are looking for minutes and a ton of them just opened up.

As for Collins, his production won't even matter--this move is for Kawhi. It was always unfair to make him bang with the PFs when he's an elite Board Man at the 3.
