Lakers/Pelicans

Post#1 » by dcstanley » Sun Jul 6, 2025 5:40 am

Seen this idea floating on the interwebz and wanted to hear the thoughts of the esteemed members of T&T

LAL in: Herb Jones and Dejounte Murray
NOP in: Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, Maxi Kleber, and Gabe Vincent

LAL takes on Murray's contract to acquire Jones' defensive prowess without trading any draft capital.
NOP attaches Jones to Murray's toxic contract for expiring salary that can contribute on the court and a recent lottery pick.

I think Lakers would do this trade but it's not without risk.
Reaves probably has to come off the bench.

Don't think I understand why Pelicans do it. Just to get out of Murray's deal?

I wouldn’t touch Murray contract with his injury.

Tore his Achilles in January. Probably two seasons to regain whatever form.

What makes that outgoing Pelicans package so tough is the possibility that Murray is completely toast after his Achilles tore, and you're basically paying $45M a year to Herb Jones plus deadweight. That's negative value to me, and a [probably] rebuilding team in New Orleans shouldn't dilute Herb's value on a bargain contract by attaching one of the worst contracts in the league to it. Just eat those three years, it's not coming together in NOLA that soon anyway.

Reaves, Herb, Luka, LeBron, Ayton
Goodwin, Bronny, Vando, LaRavia, Hayes

Even without Murray it could be worth it for Herb

Pelicans will need to see that Murray is cooked before paying Herb to dump him, this values Murray as dead money when we simply can't assume that yet.

For sake of mine mental health i hope the Pels never again trade with Lakers.
Pelicans shouldnt pay Herb to get rid of Murray, but they also shouldnt give 2026 unprotected superpick(better of pels/bucks) to move up 10 spots to draft fat guy and allow him to get even fatter in New Orleans, so who knows...

If your mental health is a concern then consider a different team to support

Don’t have to touch Murray contrary to get herb? That’s like saying herb worth 45 million a year.

Pels are under the cap, with no big pending contracts to worry about for next year and a significant amount of minutes likely going to rookie scale guys. I don't think there is big pressure to get off the contract, especially when it likely makes us worse this year.

If this season is a tire fire for the Pels, they likely sell off Herb and Trey for assets. If it isn't then they keep them regardless, so Im not sure why they make the move. Any benefit of having playable players this year is lost because you miss out on Herb.
