Question: If the Celtics decide to sign Dame Lillard, can they apply for two disabled exceptions? (Tatum, Lillard)
The NBA Disabled Player Exception (DPE) allows a team to sign, trade for, or claim a player on waivers to replace a player who is expected to miss the rest of the season due to injury or illness. This exception is granted if an NBA-appointed physician determines it's substantially more likely than not that the injured player will be unable to play through June 15. The value of the DPE is capped at either half of the injured player's salary or the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, whichever is less

So a quote from Brad Stevens himself doesn't count but let's watch what the team's social media coordinator has to say?
Yeah, actually, that's true.

Unless it's to really get under the tax this year, I think keeping him makes the most sense, where we can either keep him or lose his salary next summer.

If Brad's talking tomorrow we should get a clear sense on what's happening with Simons, Al, etc.

Probably means there are more moves coming today.

Re: Holy Offseason I Can’t Believe it’s July FA/Trade/Waiver Thread
My prediction is Simons and/or Niang get moved to free up more space. I think ultimately Brad signs Al and Dame. JT/Dame rehab together. Al does a 1-year at a time approach. Here's the thing with Al. The East is weak. Even without JT the Celtics can still win 47-52 games. I expect a huge year from Jaylen Brown, DWhite and Pritchard. And if for some reason it turns into a lottery year, Brad can then flip Al to a contender for an asset at the deadline. Doesn't hurt for Al to stay where he's comfortable and then figure out the rest down the line. He's already won a title.
Why sign with the Warriors now and then it turns out Steph or Butler is hurt and you're in San Fran as a play-in team. Stick around and see it through with Boston. There's some legacy stuff on the line with Al too. He's borderline number retirement at this point. I don't think he's quite there, yet....but if he sticks around another couple seasons and there's a few more moments, he might be.
Worst case scenario for Al....Jaylen Brown gets hurt or something and they shut him down. At that point Brad and Al can work together on finding a location that really works for him. "Hey, Al. Knicks are interested. Right down the road. Yabu didn't work out for them, and they really need another big." etc etc

Simons and Niang is $35 million
What is the cost in draft capital to move off $35 million in expirings?
We can trade our 2026, 2031 firsts (or our 27 and 2032 firsts)
To weigh in on the matter, I hate the idea of giving up future picks to dump money

Celtics can’t afford to spend first round picks in order to save money. There won’t be enough assets remaining to upgrade the team. Second round picks should be the only thing going out in a salary dump.

Holiday got Brogdon'd which is a bit ironic. Just be glad the Blazers didn't nix the trade altogether like the Clippers did with Brogs.

On the first part of this: JD Davison or Jordan Walsh might be slightly vulnerable at the moment.
The second part: No financial edicts from ownership. That's good.
The third part: That's reality. We'll see.

The Celtics are about $20 million over the luxury tax line with all 15 roster spots filled, but teams are required to carry just 14 players. Sources have stressed that ownership has not issued any financial edicts to the front office. But the Celtics have been a tax team for the last three years, and teams are hit with harsh repeater penalties when going over the mark in three of four seasons. So, avoiding the tax this year, with Jayson Tatum likely to miss the entire season because of an Achilles’ injury anyway, could help Boston eventually reset that clock.

Brad won't attach 1st rd picks to move off 1-year cash. That really only comes into play when it's multiple years. It'll likely be trades that bring some money back, but not as much. 35m but probably end up saving another 12-15m. Something along those lines.

I wonder whether Brad tried to flip Simons for John Collins. Not a fan of Collins but at least he plays a position of need and maybe can still improve in a winning environment. Kinda winning next season.
Heat got a steal with Norman Powell considering they didn't surrender much.

I would have been delighted if the Celtics had rescinded the Holiday trade.

Because having his contract on the books for 3 more years would be tremendous for us going forward. What's Bender up to these days? Maybe some untapped potential there still.

I mean, Jalen Green just got traded for KD. Norman Powell just got traded too. Lavine was traded a few months ago. Bane got traded for like 5 1st round picks.
Simons just got traded for Jrue Holiday.
All of them can play the 2 and are best known for their scoring. Most are on the younger side..

The deal doesn't save much money this year, and there will always be a market for a player like Holiday.
