Re: Shams: Powell to Miami, Collins to LA, Love,SloMo,2nd to Utah
I think Collins is getting a bit undersold here. I like it for Miami and LA, but Utah should have gotten a little more. Would have hoped the Pistons were interested if he is that cheap.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Yeah, I don't get how anyone couldn't live this for LA, especially if they get Beal.
Obviously, Miami made out like bandits.
No idea what Utah is doing.

Not sure but Utah is in a great place to take on some salary dumps now. The trade/FA market isn’t over yet.
Who else has the ability to take on big salary? I think CHI has a big TE and the full MLE still, but their owner is so cheap they don’t usually take on salary dumps.

I think we might be at the point where it's a bit of an over correction. The regular season isn't going to be officiated like playoffs and you still need guys who can put the ball in the hoop over an 82 game span.
Yes, but how many of these "contenders" can afford to have these types take up to 40-50M of the cap knowing they will be ineffective in the playoffs?
Even the kings are trying to unload 2 of these types.
You still have to get to the playoffs and there are different levels of postseason efficacy. What's the Clippers record without Powell last season?
I think they'll be okay because Collins can reproduce a lot of Powell's points, but it's not really possible to play full tilt like the Pacers did for 82 games. As far as paying guys like Powell, you can always wait on the market to determine worth.

Well yet another jazz player I was off on the value. Not as far off as I was with Sexton, but still surprised we couldn't get 2 or 3 seconds or a scrappy first for Collins.
What is next? Markanen for a box of rocks?? Wouldnt surprise me at this point.

None of us really had Utah cutting 15~ million as part of the valuation. Think there’s a few seconds to be had in a 25 million dollars TPE.

My only downside for LA is Norman stepped up when clippers had injuries. Clippers always have injuries so i think he might be missed.
Collins won’t give you the same shot creation.
Can argue when everybody is healthy. Normal isn’t really needed

DeRozan, Kuzma, KCP, Klay each fit in that TPE in terms of single players w/bad salaries.

Thought Utah only saved a few mil, instead they saved over 13+ mil, that's a HUGE win if they can parlay selling that cap space into 2-3 SRP or 1 FRP pick.

Zero desire to have Kuzma around impressionable young players.

milwaukee dont have 2nds left to trade i think. swapping anderson for kuzma cost a 1st, not 2nds

Anfernee Simons

Would need to be a ton of 2nds. The problem with the TPE is multiyear salaries probably need a 1st to unload into that and I'm not sure many teams are that motivated to dump money. Expirings + 2nds probably make more sense.

No, we don't want or need another combo guard - we just spent time trading one and releasing one and we still have George. Simons is a putrid fit for us and we'd need to be incentivized to take him.

okay, no worries
Celts can do Simons and the draft rights to Yam Madar?
if Danny is still enamored with Yam?

So we'd be taking two small guards ... if we wanted Madar I am sure we could offer a 2nd or two. I've never heard of him, but I won't argue if the FO sees something in an international guy.
I do not see a trade where Simons goes to Utah making sense. Maybe a third team would have a smaller expiring that works as matching salary for Simons and that expiring could go to Utah with incentive from Boston and the third team.

On the other hand, what's the likelihood that Norm ever repeats last season's performance? He already came back down to earth a bit after the All-Star break and then had some really bad playoff clunkers against Denver.
Running it back with a now 32-year-old Norm and expecting him to repeat his first half of last season isn't realistic, it's just magical thinking. It would have been front office malpractice not to pounce on the opportunity to trade him for a younger player who fits our needs better, especially considering how low the trade value seems to be for players of Norm's archetype.

My thought is
CP3-Harden-Klaw-Collins-Zubac.
CP3 gets to start, stays near his family, gets to compete. Clippers get some much needed positional flexibility.
Heat... since I don't like them I like this deal.
If I were a Heat fan, I would ... be enjoying the beach right now... but also would not be happy. Yeah kinda getting something for nothing here, but Powell just had a career year, total outlier, and is offense oriented. Miami now has Rozier, Powell, Herro, Wiggins all trying to get their 20 ppg, Wiggins plays above average defense, not elite, but good. Powell has been known for defense, but every year older makes that harder.
Lots of guys looking to shoot, not a lot of guys looking to pass it.
Jazz get SOMETHING for Collins, so good on them. Collins as much as I dislike him, is a much better player than that value.

Surprised Powell didn't fetch more than this after the season he just had
Part of it is he keeps missing a lot of games. He missed 22 last season, (he had a mostly available 23/24 only missing 6,) he missed another 22 in 22/23 and missed 47 in 21/22. His offense is good, his defense is average at best. Expiring and expecting a pay raise is also not great for his trade value.
